Jayson Blair, the diminutive ex-journalist who shook up the mighty New York Times when his serial plagiarism was revealed last year, has all but evaporated from public view.
Now seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist and working out of a basement office in his parents' home in Centreville, Va., he says he has found God and thinks he has a calling other than journalism although he's not sure what it is yet.
The one thing that hasn't changed is his compulsive reading habit. And on his bedside table these days is Seth Mnookin's chronicle of the Times debacle, "Hard Times."
"Seth is the Kenneth Starr-type prosecutor of Howell Raines," Blair said in a phone interview. "I guess I'm the Monica Lewinsky of the story."
While Mnookin's book is heavily laced with anecdotes about the writers and editors who unearthed the scandal, Blair thinks it may have missed the more important story not surprising he feels it is his own.
Blair gives talks in the Virginia area four or five times a month, where he discusses his memoir, "Burning Down My Master's House." The book, which hit stores in May, sold poorly before the publisher, New Millennium, declared bankruptcy. He's trying to get the paperback rights back, he said, so he can reissue it and correct some of the mistakes.
"I believe there is a better purpose for me....." Blair said. "I don't think it is journalism. I got into it originally because I wanted to help people."
He still hopes his memoir will be picked up and turned into a movie.........
He split up with his girlfriend....a low-level Times employee who quit in the wake of the scandal that engulfed their lives........"We're not together any more," he said. "She moved to Miami to work for the Kerry campaign."

I never even knew God was lost. Why wasn't there a thread?
Unless Bill O'Reilley already snagged the post.
Jayson also has job offers from Home Shopping Network to do a spot on fake diamonds. And Wal-Mart wants him in East Overshoe, Arkansas, to be a Customer Service rep.
Maybe Jayson could save himself by writing a how-to on being a loser......"Losing for Dummies."
Guess who said this?
"I believe there is a better purpose for me..... I don't think it is journalism. I got into it originally because I wanted to help people."
Well, Jesse Jackass will be needing an apprentice charlatan for his ministry soon. He is getting up there, and he can only sow division to one mob at a time. Jayson as already proven himself to be able to use his race to dupe the powerful, so the groundwork is already laid.
Trading one loser for another?
I'll thank you not to use "Jesse Jackass" and "laid" in the same sentence (bigtime huff).
So I guess this means Dims will not call for lifitng the tax-exempt status of churches?
Yeah, God has been sitting in the Lost and Found unclaimed for months now.
You just better watch it, m/s/ister.

Who'da thought?
"Journalist" Blair interviewed by "Journalist" King.
Oooh, bet that one was a real eye-opener (yawwwn).
I wonder how many telephone books they had to put under Jayson to keep him in camera-range.
A book should be written about how the publisher went bankrupt after the Jayson book debacle.
I just hope (smirk) the publisher wasn't using fancy accounting practices.
:)
Yeah and to boost his book sales.
