It's Morality, Stupid!

Perhaps the new slogan for the Republican Party should be: “It’s Morality, Stupid!”

In the 2004 election, the Republicans won the presidency and gained a majority in Congress, in large part due to the high voter-turnout of Evengelical Christians.

According to the exit polling conducted in southern states, these Christians went out to the polls because they did not want an extreme liberal becoming president -- evidenced in the fact that 22% of those polled believed that morality was the most important issue of the 2004 campaigns.

Opposition to gay marriage also proved to be important in courting the religious vote, as southern Christians overwhelmingly supported the conservative viewpoint of banning the controversial issue.

Additionally, exit polling data showed that a high majority of Southern voters were Protestants who attended church on a regular basis. Maybe instead of "stupidly" touting the economy, Democrats will soon learn the real issues in the minds and hearts of the American people -- those of high moral and ethical standards.

A recent survey showed that 2/3 of people who identified themselves as Republican or conservative attended church once a week or more while 2/3 of people who identify themselves as Democrat or liberal said they rarely or never attend church.

Another divide is this: the ten richest states all went for Kerry and are also stingiest, with charitable giving the lowest per capita in the nation. Meanwhile, the 10 poorest states all went for Bush and have the HIGHEST per capita charitable giving in the nation.

Maybe it is because the 10 richest states are also the 10 highest taxed states and they literally believe that they "gave at the office" through their payroll taxes.

I keep thinking of Carters "Malaise" speech and the complaints of various radical leftists that we are too materialistic and selfish. Then I see that the conservatives voted based on moral and traditional values.

The liberals are so out of touch with the red states they have no concept of of what moves the life of the typical conservative evangelical.

"those of high moral and ethical standards."
I wouldn't even aim for HIGH, but the day the RATS start exhibiting ANY "moral and ethical standards" would be welcome.
