Bipolar Disorder Re: Global Warming

Those who can't forecast the weekend's weather are saying that polar ice is melting, the seas are rising and the sky is falling. Haven't we seen this movie?

Some 300 scientists this month produced an Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report that warned of an accelerating melt-off of the Arctic polar ice cap and the Greenland ice sheet.

They pleaded with industrial nations to reduce their emissions of so-called "greenhouse" gases, directly contradicting other scientific and historical evidence that the warming and cooling of the Earth is a natural cycle in which man's impact has been minimal.

Their report reads like the script of the movie "The Day After Tomorrow." Released in May, the film is based on the theory that the melting of polar ice would shut down the Gulf Stream, leading to a frozen New York, tornadoes in Los Angeles and snow in India.

=====

In April, a team from Harvard concluded the most comprehensive study of global temperature over the last 1,000 years. It found that the world was much warmer during the Middle Ages than it is today. Vineyards flourished in England.

Humanity not only survived, it flourished. When Eric the Red brought settlers to Greenland in 986, the climate supported a Viking way of life based upon cattle, hay, grain and herring for about the next 300 years.

Was it man-made pollution that allowed three centuries of Nordic settlement in Greenland? Don't think so.

Yes.

And wasn't "Day After Tomorrow" supposed to be one of those great Hollywood efforts that would contribute to bringing down The President? Propaganda that took millions of the loony left to the cleaners.

The report was typical of climate researchers. Plagues, death and destruction are coming our way unless we get substantial more research money.

In fact, the study merely noted that polar sea ice had diminished 6% since the year they decided to start measuring from. Sea ice, if it melts, will not change the level of the oceans 1 iota. It is just frozen ocean so when it melts, it just goes to back to the ocean. The water displaced by ice turns to water so that part of the conclusions in the study are bogus.

What they did was assume that artic temperatures will continue rising leading to a melting of land glaciers primarily in Greenland. It will take extreme continuing rise in temperatures and many centuries before there is any appreciable melt in the Greenland glaciers.

The history of the climate over the past 3.5 million years has been one of ICE. Ice ages last about 115,000 years interspersed with brief warm periods of 10,000 to 15,000 years when the ice age glaciers melt back. We are actually due for the next one to start.

We may be doing exactly the right thing by pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and slightly raising average temperatures. Some day, there will be a new Kyoto Protocol asking all countries to pump out as much CO2 as possible because the snow didn't melt over the summer in northern Canada if you know what I mean.

"Propaganda that took millions of the loony left to the cleaners."

I watched the DVD. It wasn't even good propaganda. It certainly wasn't even good science fiction. It was a comedy that didn't mean to be. Quaid needs to stick to good movies like "The Rookie" or even the not so well received "The Alamo."

Water expands when frozen by a ratio of 10:1. That is why a full jug of water pops it's top when frozen, as well as most other liquids, like a frozen can of beer for example. 1" of rain equals 10" of snow. If the Polar Ice Caps melt, Sea Height will drop due to the lack of displacement caused by the lack of expanded water Ice Caps. Water ice is 10x the size as it is as water liquid.

Hope that makes some sense, just a thought. Current environmental science is wrong, IMHO.

and so on - there's more proof that the earth is just doing her thing than to back up the political scheme that aims to rule the world and subjugate the US

Look at this ice core data for the last 420,000 years.

You can see the DRAMATIC effect that heavy industrialization had on the climate 135,000 years ago.

The idea that mere humans can have any significant impact on warming or cooling of the earth is absurd. Our existence depends on what the sun does, not on how many styrofoam cups are used daily, or the number of fireplaces in Park City. Light from the sun, even though it is 93 million miles away, gets here in about 8 seconds. It's power is so vast that all of our cars, power plants, plastic bags, what have you, amount to zilch. Sure enough, global warming is caused by the sun!
