Just a sidebar note... I have personally called all the Republican Senators on the committee expressing my displeasure with Spector. The recurring response is "Thank you... You're not alone."

As a former resident of Texas, I took the addtional step of writing a letter to Cornyn. I've been attempting to fax it to his Washington office for over 24 hours, and have yet to receive anything but a busy signal on his fax line.

Reflecting what the switchboard operators conveyed, "I'm not alone" in attempting to fax the good Senator.

Why does this guy want this chairmanship so badly? He can't be trusted and he will try to shape the court to his liking. Write to Frist and tell him to keep this Senator out of the Chair. This is his last term and he has zero allegience to the party or strict interpratations of the Constitution.

I don't think Specter will get the job -- to say the least. Frist, et al, know what THEIR OBJECTIVES ARE and know the feelings of caring Americans.

Specter should not be pursuing this position with the vigor he is, given it is his last term. Again this smells of the far-left. IMHO, this is why it is SOOOOOO important this guy NOT get the job.

Sadly, these senators know that the people opposing Specter will still vote Republican in 2006 and 2008. So they won't act on their requests to remove the liberal chairman. Arlen is as secure in the post as a prince in his castle.

Specter wants the chairmanship to implement his own liberal agenda, and he plays to win. I cannot imagine the senators having the necessary backbone to stand up to Arlen. Maybe they will, but I can't see it. In fact, a backbone surgeon could make a fortune performing on certain Republican senators.

Just wondering, where are all the forces of darkness in the Specter controversy? Why haven't NARAL and People for the UnAmerican Way jumped in with their worthless two cents in this debate? Why aren't they circling the wagons around Specter?

They must be working furiously behind the scenes .....

It could be that NARAL has decided that it has no need to get involved because it expects the Republican senators to follow tradition and install the liberal Specter as chairman. And NARAL may believe in the old adage if one's enemy is fighting from within, then step back and let them self-destruct.

Dumping Specter must be a non-starter. "The Capital Gang" on Saturday, the CNN weekly starring Mark Shields, had nothing on the conservative opposition to Shields. Instead, Shields focused on the possibility of IA's liberal Governor Vilsack becoming the DNC chairman.
