Within the next six or seven months, I'm hoping to move to Florida and set up residence. My youngest son, age 34 will be moving down there to set up residence as well. I'm asking for Freeper input and advice on where to move in Florida.
Thanks for the help.
Absolutely anywhere in the Keys except Key West.
Thanx, I never knew any of that. Aloha
Thanks for the info on Mobile. I'm watching this thread like a hawk and bookmarking for future reference, as I'm considering a move to FL or thereabouts in a year or so, and Mobile is on my list of possibilities. I've never been there, but have driven past on I-10, admired the beauty of the setting, and have heard good things about it. Downtown is charming, right? Is it safe to live in town? For a single and not young woman? I have a strange and wonderful profession which generally attracts musicians and performers as clients, but is also of great benefit to elderly people as well. My greatest concern is to land in the right place, where I'll be able to earn a living. College towns are good if the colleges have drama departments and the city has orchestras and theaters.
Got here Wednesday, and the sun's been out beautifully every day. In the low 80's every day, and 60's at night. It's great!
Last night was the spa and pool after dinner, lol.
We're on the gulf in Cape Coral. Nice community, family living. Over four hundred miles of canals.
"Mobile" can be a lot of different places. The city itself (we'll call it west side of the bay) is exurban and spread out. Newest development is westward. I wouldn't call downtown "charming". Lots of fun bars and restaurants, but nothing like boutique shopping...yet. The new cruise ship terminal will be good for downtown and there's much new development going on. The area called "Midtown" is accessible to the suburbs and shopping, yet with the lovely old houses and big oak trees. Two universities: U. of So. Ala and Springhill College. There is a symphony and some decent theater.
The east side of the bay (Fairhope) is perhaps more "artsy". More of a village atmosphere, good shopping, also good rural areas. Good beaches close by.
If you need more info, let me know!

The Florida Panhandle, South Walton County, in particular. A mecca for a real estate career. Property values are predicted to be on the rise for the next 6 to 10 years. The only other place where beachfront property value is higher is Malibu. A Republican stronghold - great people - laid back lifestyle.
Sounds wonderful!!
See? That is exactly why I advised NOT to move to Key West! :-)
Same here.
Many thanks for the Mobile info, Timeout. Fairhope sounds great! I may be in touch again as the time to move approaches. Not until my 13-year-old doggie goes to dog heaven, however, as she is basically an arctic dog and needs her cool acre to run around on. She's a Keeshond and their coats really cannot be shaved. Gee whiz, the factors that govern our lives!
All the best,
Veto!

I live in Clearwater - close to the waterfront and a bite-sized downtown that is utterly charming. The neighborhoods here are all very, very old and feature these precious old bungalows, mature trees stuffed into every possible corner and a pretty decent waterfront. There is a marina nearby, Clearwater Beach just over the causeway, a park that has outdoor concerts frequently and a nice mix of residents of all ages. It's a rather groovy area.
Now, St. Augustine has us beat. The city is on the east coast of the state and it is so charming and practically ancient. St. Augustine is the eldest settled city in North America, if I'm not mistaken and the Spanish influence is everywhere you look. It and its surrounding communities are all tucked along the coast and they are truly lovely.
It's a tough call. Both coasts have their charms. You will really have to stomp around to decide, but both are definitely worth a look.
Now, if you were emigrating to Sydney, NSW Australia, I could definitely help you out with no question! I left my heart in St. Leonards! Talk about a stunning place to live!
