BOSTON -- Gov. Mitt Romney called on Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello to resign on Friday, citing ongoing management troubles at the Big Dig, including recent revelations about hundreds of leaks in the $14.6 billion project's main tunnel.

Romney has long sought to bring the independent authority under the control of the state transportation department, saying the move would bring make the Turnpike Authority, which oversees the massive highway project, more accountable to voters.

the $14.6 billion project's main tunnel.

It just crossed my mind what kind of border fence we could build with that amount of money.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off-topic.

You ain't seen nothing yet. If it collapses, all hell will break loose. I read the other day that they had pumped out something like a quarter BILLION gallons of water over the last year. It seems the rate of leakage might be increasing.

I recall an earlier poster on this topic stating the entire Channel Tunnel project (a much, much bigger job, to say the least) cost $31.1 billion.

I heard this AM that it's the Legislature's call. I can't see how they'd stand by him at this point though.

A few days ago a Boston DJ suggested they build the central artery above ground to avoid these leakage problems...

Beat me to it! Unaccountable tenured labor performs just as poorly as unaccountable tenured teachers and professors. One group threatens our safety and the other threatens our future.

As long as unions keep shielding workers from responsibility or accountability, even the best workers and professionals will be unable to escape the fog of their own echo chamber.

Howie loves Free Republic, he reads from it often. I heard him speak of your E-mail. Did you like how he said the tunnel should be named after Ted Kennedy? Too funny.

Howie: pick my police blotter entry today!
