MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal's office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.
The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on October 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.
Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.
When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.
The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.
He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.
"By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself," police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

Kid learned a valuable lesson (may save his live during his criminal career).
Pull a weapon and a weapon will be pulled on you.
Not to mention the Public School enviro and the LE environment.
50,000 volts on a 6 year old? Viciously defeats the purpose is an understatement.... oh, and tomorrow he will be told to be careful of molesting sex on TV...
This 6-year-old was a serious threat. I'm suprised they didn't take him down with the riot shotgun.
I know of child who has mental problems once completely destroy a class room .. it took 6 teachers to stop the kid .. they ended up having to stick him in a closest till the parents came
Yes, I know it sounds harsh .. but they feared for the safety of the other kids and had to do it.
Yes. He is so young. He can be changed and turned around. In essence he's a baby. Think about it. He's only 6 years old. What a terrible time for this child. We'll pray he can grow and enjoy his innocent childhood instead of the path this might have taken him. :(
I am proud of my Geeksmanship. I am the life of many a party.
Photon Torpedo tubes closed for maintenance. Sir.
Oh, I forgot, that might hurt him.
My first thought, upon reading the account above, was that the officer who discharged the Taser may have been reluctant to come in contact with an edged weapon that had already drawn blood. He may have decided the Taser was the best option to subdue the lad without risking possible contimination by an errant cut from the glass.
We live in an AIDS aware society these days and he may have received training to deal with this type of situation.
I know that people here will reply to this by saying, "AIDS from a 6-year old?!"
But who here would be willing to take the risk? I for one, would have...but that's just me.
Apparently not. CNN is reporting that it took up to 9 police officers to subdue the six year old after he was tasered. 5 officer were sent to local hospitals and it's reported that 3 have since been released.
If that boy was zapped with 50,000 volt he would have been fried to a crisp I would think. something is wrong with the article
A point that I hadn't thought of-but very valid
I was looking at it from a tactical aspect. Edged weapons are far more dangerous than people think.
Ri-FREAKIN-diculous!
The most recent South Park had something like this.
I'm sure the childless (or those too old to remember their children as tykes) will criticize the police for this, but they haven't seen my five-year old and two-year old when they get riled up, especially when there's football on the TV. Honestly, there are some days when the Thorazine and barbituates just don't seem to do the trick, and the Taser is the only option left for Mrs. Lee and me.
That is a consideration...in addition, I don't think very many people on the forum have ever seen a psychotic 6 yo.
I think the focus should be on what is wrong in this child's life rather than the regretable use of the stun gun.
Last week a 6-year old brought crack cocaine to school in her lunch sack -- and they sent a note home to her parents!
