"I'm sorry, but only stupid Catholics remained in the Democratic fold after the 1960s and Roe vs. Wade. Catholic teaching does not mandate the kind of socialism that has been served up by Dems over the years."

Docility has been taught as a Catholic virtue. Unfortunately once the left captured the seminaries, the universities, the MSM and the schools (both government and parochial), that virtue led vast numbers of the faithful down the primrose path. The way was wide and easy. Only a remnant fought and still fight. But then, hasn't that always been the case?

It's understandable that people with problems and financial difficulties are tempted by the promises of government benefits, etc. You can't trade away the lives of the innocent unborn and the moral foundations of civilized society for government money. Anyone with a firm grasp of ethics should understand this.

Personally, I would rather starve and be homeless sleeping in the open air than to ever vote for a baby-killer or anti-Catholic secular humanist liberal.

If people think the social safety net should be larger, lobby pro-life Republicans on these issues.

For one hundred years, the South saw the Republican party as the party of the War of Northern Aggression and Reconstruction. My grand daddy would sooner vote for a yellow dog as pull the lever for a Republican. Democrats like JFK promoted a strong defense and tax cuts for all. Sure, they had their liberal faction, but that was held in check by more moderate forces.

However, the demo party, beginning in '68 and more fully in '72 abandoned its more conservative factions and ran to the left. This move became even more pronounced in the 70's with losers like Jimmy Carter speaking the language of religion while floating a bloviated liberal agenda.

Southerners became totally disillusioned by the Dems and resorted to the GOP as the only party that reflected their values.

Economic policies did not fuel the South's move to the GOP. Moral issues (God, guns and gays) and national defense precipitated the move. Only over time did tax, fiscal and economics take over.

This election purged out what remained of the old Dem party in the South and solidified GOP dominance in the big sections of the midwest. In the next 4 to 8 years, you should see the tilt of states like WI and MN to the GOP, this along with population trends could allow the GOP to hold electoral dominance for a long time.
