Senate has a record of inaction on this front out of deference to the judicial branch, i.e. really a deference to the Senate members of a judge's home state who approved the nomination. The Alcee Hastings' impeachment debacle shows what can happen when a judge is impeached and removed from office. Hastings' claimed he was set up on bribery charges (despite an FBI video showing what happened). Upon removal, Hastings successfully turned his martyrdom (played the race card) into a successful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The country badly needs 10 year term limits for all federal judges, including the Supreme Court. Would work wonders.
