Firefighters: Van Explodes While Woman Sniffs Propane

CANTON, Ohio -- A woman was sniffing propane in the back of a van when her husband entered the van with a lighted cigarette, causing an explosion that ripped the roof off the vehicle.

Donald Rohrig was taken to Akron Children's Hospital and was listed in good condition. His wife, Tammy Rohrig, was taken to Aultman Hospital and was listed in satisfactory condition.

Firefighters said Tammy Rohrig had been sniffing propane in a van Tuesday evening when Donald Rohrig went out to look for her. Gordon Black of the Fire Prevention Bureau said Donald Rohrig went into the van with a lighted cigarette, causing it to explode.

The explosion caused a flash fire, which was contained to the van, according to the Fire Department.

Harry Cavitt, a retired firefighter who lives a half-mile away, said he had never seen anything like this before.

"It's just scary thinking about it," said neighbor Lillie Johnson, Cavitt's mother.

Firefighters were called out to the house in October for another propane-related situation. Officials said the house was full of a propane smell and had to be ventilated by the Fire Department.

""Lighted" is a correct usage."

Maybe in some bizarro world where dogs and cats lie down together, but dangit, it should be lit!

Webster's doesn't even have lighted listed - now I wish I had the OED available.

re: Do they teach english in journalism school?

Forget English, how about good old fashioned science? A cigarette will not ignite propane or gas or kerosene. It takes an open flame or spark, not just the glowing end of a cigarette. My dad used to manage a gas station, that's what they were in the 50's when he had his, and he would bet people $5 that they could not ignite gas in the bottom of a bucket using nothing but the cigarette they were smoking. He never had to pay off on that bet. In this case I would sooner think a spark caused by the dome light coming on and going off would have caused it.

It happens to be the nearest burn unit. They specialize in pediatrics but they also treat adult burn victims.

These people don't seem to grasp the concept of propane.

While in the NG in Colorado, we went to fire the howitzers in Colorado Springs at Fort Carson, one cold winter weekend.

One of the senior Sgts brought his own mini motor home. He bragged all day about how he would have a warm place to rest and have a hot shower at the end of the day while the rest of us would shiver in the barracks.

At the end of the day, he walked around the back of the RV to light the water heater. He didn't realize the pilot light had blown out on the heater earlier in the day. When the water heater lit, the whole thing literally blew out.

It blew out all the windows and the windshield, bowed the frame, but actually burnt little inside, though the little curtains were scorched.

He drove it home wearing a Snoopy hat and tankers goggles. He was stopped a couple of times by the CHP and had to ID himself with his own CHP badge. By the time he reached home every trooper in the state had heard about it.

If she had used MAP gas, the whole incident would have been much more kinky.
