LIFE & CRIMES OF A LEADER WHO ROSE ON MYTHS AND LIES
New York Post ^ | 11/11/04 | ANDY SOLTIS

REVERED by Palestinians as a hero and reviled by Israelis as a murdering terrorist, Yasser Arafat waged an unrelenting, decades-long battle for an independent state.

[snip]

With Syrian help, Arafat became so powerful that he challenged King Hussein during a civil war known as "Black September." But Hussein expelled Arafat in a bloody confrontation and he moved to Lebanon.

In exile, Arafat's PLO carried out a series of dramatic attacks, including airplane hijackings and the slaying of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972. Yet Arafat managed to convince world leaders he was a nationalist who had been forced to use violence as a last resort.

In 1974 he wore a pistol as he addressed the U.N. General Assembly.

In Lebanon, Arafat tried to create a new military and political stronghold. But after repeated cross-border attacks on Israel, he was encircled by the Israeli army in a campaign directed by his arch rival, Ariel Sharon.

[snip]

In 1994, Arafat returned to the Gaza Strip for the first time in three decades and established a quasi-government, the Palestinian Authority, with him as president.

His military and police established control of Gaza and he set up headquarters at Ramallah in the West Bank.

But progress toward a final peace accord slowed during the mid-1990s, then ground to a halt.

Critics blamed Arafat's hard line, including his demand for the return of all Palestinian refugees to Israel. Equally at fault was a new wave of terrorist attacks, featuring a powerful new weapon, the homicide bombing.

What a POS! Look at the media fawning over a terrorist and you know exactly where they stand!

The KGB created the PLO. Journalists are forbidden to speak of this. Brains must be washed and inspected periodicaly.

For the past several hours, CNN has been an "all Arafat, all the time" network. Unbelievable how they're treating this terrorist's death as they would, say, the death of a US president or Princess Di. This is nuts!

I'm disgusted. Cable has an "All Arafat" fest going. Guess I'll be watching a lot of movies during the next 48 hours.

Does this mean we can dance in the streets the way the Palestinians did after 9/11?

Thanks for the post, kattracks. I did a double-take when I saw the author's name. If there are any chess players out there, I just did a quick "Google" and found that yes, the author is the same fellow we know as "International Grandmaster" Andy Soltis!

The KGB also gave had him change his name to Yasser...round about 1968/69...about the time him and Dr. Georges Habbash fell out and Habbash created the PFLP/PLFP (depending on the translation), a rival group.

OM (old media) is treating Arafat as a HERO. They make me sick!

I agree with the New York Post..."good riddance and he won't be missed".
