An Islamic court in northern Nigeria has discharged and acquitted a pregnant teenager of her conviction for adultery, for which she had been sentenced to be stoned to death.

Presiding judge Muhammad Mustapha Umar of the Upper Sharia court said on Wednesday that the lower Sharia (Islamic law) court was wrong in sentencing Hajara Ibrahim, 18, to death by stoning last October.

"This court observes the following faults in the lower court judgement. Firstly, the judge was wrong in sentencing Hajara to 100 lashes and death by stoning, all at the same time," he said.

This is correct. She did not commit adultery; she committed fornication. Additionally, there would be no justification for punishing the child with death for the crime of her father and mother.

Can anyone tell me how this whipping deal works? I thought that 20 lashes in the British navy was considered a life threatening punishment. Do they do it segments or is it done in a way that is less traumatic? 100 lashes sounds like death sentence to me.

Well the judge is right. Everyone knows that the adulterer gets the 100 lashes, and the woman is stoned to death. Also their may be technical problems here because there must be 4 eyewitnesses.
