Snowe and Collins are moderates. Chaffee is to the left of them.
But alas, as is always true up there in New England, if we didn't have them in those seats, the alternative would be outright communists. They are the best that we can get and we all know it.
We all want a solution to Specter, guy, but don't go too far. Any organization, even a political party, composed entirely of yes men is not good. I don't think we object to Specter in the party. We object to him having critical power.
For the Record, by Arlen Specter: "I never 'warned' the president about anything."

"Either Senator Specter got the message that he should not be tinkering with the President's judicial nominees, or another senator will have to serve as chairman of this important committee. Advice and consent does not allow for obstruction. It simply allows for an up-or-down vote. All senators, including Senator Specter, need to realize that the Constitution rests the authority to nominate and appoint judges with the President, and the Senate's role of advice and consent should mandate an up-or-down vote on each of these nominees."
Proper emphasis, in bold, added.
Dear Senator: Thank you for serving. I apologize for this request. I am sure you have many more requests with which to deal.
Please do not permit Sen. Specter to Chair the Judicial Comm. His view, that the US Constitution is a living changing document is in total conflict with our system of government. The Constitution must be strictly construed.
The basis of our laws, the Constitution, may not be changed by Judges, but by an Amendment, as stated in the Constitution. Specter's refusal to appoint BORK a Federal Judge speaks right to the point.
Thank you. I know you will do the right thing.

Specter does not want to hear the will of the people. His mind is closed and so are his ears. Lookup your Senator at www.senate.gov. If he / she is a Republican, let them know you participated in the BUSH Revolution for Regime Change from Leftist, Democratic obstructed Congresses.
This is his second term:
Why would he care?
Mega-Bump! I emailed the Senators - thanks for the links!
Subject: Hospital Humor A woman called a local hospital. "Hello. Could you connect me to the person who gives information about patients. I'd like to find out if a patient is getting better, doing as expected, or getting worse."
The voice on the other end said, "What is the patient's name and room number?" "Sarah Finkel, room 302." "I'll connect you with the nursing station."
"3-A Nursing Station. How can I help You?" "I'd like to know the condition of Sarah Finkel in room 302."
"Just a moment. Let me look at her records. Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals, her blood pressure is fine, she is to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and , if she continues this improvement, Dr. Cohen is going to send her home Tuesday at noon."
The woman said, "What a relief! Oh, that's fantastic... that's wonderful news!" The nurse said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you are a close family member or a very close friend!"
"Neither! I'm Sarah Finkel in 302! Nobody here tells me crap."
So where is the official GOP repudiation of Specter if he lacks the decency to step down from the nomination?
The White House has made their position known, and that is it is up to the Senate to decide Committee appointments and chairmen. The Senate Leadership is taking a similar position, that it is up to their Committees who their chairman is. It looks like the buck stops in the Committee as everyone else is punting. I think it is politically smart for the White House to defer Senate business to the Senate. Whether the Senate Leadership should step in may be another story.
Where did Specter vote on partial birth abortion?
During the Clinton years, Specter voted against the partial birth abortion ban. I believe during the Bush years, he voted for it. Which shows you the Character of Specter. When his vote was crutial, he is pro-abortion. When his vote is meaningless, he will throw in a few pro-life votes. During the Clinton years, a few more votes were needed to override Clinton's veto. During the Bush years, Bush was gonna sign the bill and there was no way to stop it.
"Why is Spectre even on the Judiciary Committee?"
Where would you rather have him?
Transportation?
Armed Services?
Finance?
Where could he be put and NOT endanger the President's programs?
I guess you could say, Specter voter against Partial Birth Abortion before he voted for it.
dubyaismypresident posted an analysis on another thread which I thought was cogent enough to share here:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now: I don't know the end game but since they aren't asking us to stop it must mean they like what we are doing
The Senate is protecting the power of all their chairmen and the Senate itself. You can bet that after this stupid boner they don't want him near that chair.
Do you honestly think they any political party or politician is going to save one loud mouth jerk who just ticked off millions of their voting base? If they do they are much to stupid to beat Hillary in 2008.
But they don't want to be seen as not respecting the Rules of the Senate especially seniority. These rules are very necessary to maintain order.
They don't want to been seen as jumping to quick. They don't want to be seen as caving in to a special interest group but rather conceding to the will of the majority of their constituents.
That's why it important for you to make the calls to your own senators as well as to Frist and the other committee members.
As for the President he is playing it very smart . The Senate is the only one that can legally deal with this.
Now the President can exert tremendous pressure but he has to be very careful because only the members of the Senate Republicans can actually do this.
If he takes sides and Specter still somehow gets the seat he can kiss his chance of getting any nominees through that committee goodbye.
This is why you see seemingly mild or neutral support from the administration. If Specter loses they will probably get someone they would much rather have. If he wins they can still say you owe me.
If we keep the pressure up the Republican Leaders of the Senate will go to him and say look this thing has gone too far we can't help you. Then basically make him an offer he can't refuse. He'd be totally insane to force them to actually vote him out on the floor.
Feel free to quote me whenever you like :-)
Thanks for continuing to post these thread, AR.
Please, if you would, add G Gordon Liddy to your Allies list. He has been encouraging his listeners all week to send in their calls and emails. I havent been to his website, but he said on the air that he has links of info and a list of contact info for the Senators to write/call.
I received a generic e-mail reply from the first time I wrote Frist. A couple of days had lapsed.
I personally like these comments by mississippi red-neck:
"Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House, Bob Livingston, Speaker of the House, Trent Lott, Majority Leader Of the Senate, Don Nickles, Majority Whip of the Senate.
All these fine men gave up their positions of great power voluntarily to keep from hurting the Republican Party, the House and Senate.
They didn't want to force their colleagues to have to do it.
Arlen Specter by not offering to do the same after causing this firestorm has shown what kind of man he is.
He has thumbed his nose at the President, the Republican Party, the voters and his fellow Republican Senators. He has put his arrogant thirst for power ahead of all.
Do you really think a man like this will care what anyone thinks once he's given the seat of power?
Keep the heat on. This jerk has to be sidelined in a corner somewhere. They can give him a seat on a less critical committee."
;-D Keep coming out with stuff like that and I will!
ME TOO, Cedar! I think I reposted his comments on another thread and was looking for them to place them here, so I'm glad you found them.
We got some really smart folks here at FR, dont we??
Yes, we do.
And I agree totally with his comments--Specter should respond as Trent Lott responded.
