Karl, you have quite a reputation around here. You were my first thought, too.

Bummer. Fire on airplanes is never a good thing, even when small. Sorta like fire on ships or submarines... putting it out is pretty much the only option. It's not like you can just run outside and wait for the fire department to show up.

Fire on board and 20 minutes out? That can't be a good thing.
To: pies
Fire on board and not expected to land for another 20 minutes? That doesn't sound good.

Hi BG, nothing up on KABC's site, nor KNX, nor KFI, nor Channel 2 KCBS - hmmmm. They announced it three times in the 11:00 pm newscast - have on ground emergency vehicles at LAX ready to go.
I would not want to be on that flight - lost a cousin on Swiss Airlines flight over Nova Scotia.

I'll second that pray. God help them, dumping the fuel sounds like they expect a rough landing...

How big a plane is it? How many passengers normally?

I hope so too. Hard to imagine a flight taking off at LAX suddenly having a fire on board. Think it may be one of the plane's engines. Hope all are okay.
