ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Deadly violence in Ivory Coast has shut down cocoa exports in the world's largest producer, closing ports that ship more than 40 per cent of the world's raw material for chocolate, cocoa traders said Tuesday.
Clashes that have pitted Ivory Coast's government and supporters against French forces come at the peak of Ivory Coast's harvest, last year at a record of 1.4 million tons.
Violence has closed the country's two main ports, in Abidjan and San Pedro, since Saturday afternoon, traders and other officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Cocoa buyers are not venturing out to buy, they said.

Much, if not most, of the Ivory Coast's cocoa beans are harvested with slave labor. The mills of God's justice grind very fine.

I find it disturbing that 40% of cocoa comes from a nation that barely has a government. Sounds ripe for a US colonial takeover to me. We must protect the chocolate supply!

If I remember correctly, M&M/Mars has exclusive contracts to buy all of its cocoa products from the Ivory Coast.
Their Cocoapro process (see www.cocoapro.com) provides the only way to preserve the range of antioxidants otherwise largely destroyed in normal processing.
That's too bad, as Dove dark chocolate will be affected, along with their new cholesterol-lowering chocolate product.
FYI for all you chocoholics!

More than 40% of the world's chocolate source?!
I don't care about the cocaine or heroin sources! Shot all the drug traders, but save the cocoa dealers!
Aarghh! I'm having withdrawal symptoms......(thud!)

Uh-oh: and a couple of days ago, a tanker swerved to avoid a deer on the highway (I forget where), spilling some 40,000+/- gallons of chocolate on the highway.
Coincidence? I think not!
