Gov. Bush Says He's Really, Really Not Running For President

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Read his lips. Gov. Jeb Bush really, really isn't interested in succeeding his brother in the White House or running for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

 He's not kidding. So stop asking. At least until 2008.

  Bush reiterated Tuesday that he's not going to run for the Senate when Florida has a seat up in '06, has no designs on the 2008 presidential race and he's getting tired of the question.

  So the natural follow-up question?

  "Might you change your mind?" asked a reporter.

  "No!" the exasperated governor responded as he entered a state Cabinet meeting Tuesday morning. "Why am I not believable on this subject? This is driving me nuts."

  But before making that clear, he dodged a question on whether he might "eventually" run for president.

  "Eventually, what's that?" Bush asked after a sigh and before launching into his oft-repeated pledge to finish his second four-year term as governor, which ends in January 2007.

  "I'm not running for the United States Senate in 2006 and I'm not running for president in 2008."

  He never got back to the question about "eventually."

"I like him, but I'm glad. If this turned into another Bush Clinton election the whole thing would have too much of the wiff of a decadant Roman Republic with the Patrician families constantly vying for power. I don't want a monarchy or an empire."

I hope not. While I like Jeb, I do not think America is ready for a dynasty. Also, on a personal note, I would like to see an election year without a Bush or Dole on the ticket. The last one was 1972 - over thirty years ago!

Jeb's problem is that if a Republican wins in 2008 he wouldn't be able to go in 2012 most likely.

That's not a problem, insofar as age goes. He's only 51. So in 2012, he'd still be only 59. He's young enough that he could even run in 2016, at age 63.

I'd love to see Jeb run. But with the exception of the Kennedys, the U.S. does not take kindly to dynasties. And the Bush family lacks the general public's love it had for the Kennedys.

Tom Ridge (PA) is looking at running. Maybe George Allen (VA). Both former governors.

The real key is to see who Dubya "annoints" two years from now.

I'd rather that he didn't annoint anyone. After eight years of Republican rule, there will be advantages to being able to run as an outsider, as someone who wasn't part of the administration.

But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Section. 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

Ratification was completed on February 27, 1951.

Well if he doesn't run, we better have another Bush, Dole, or Nixon in the wings, we can't break the streak that's been going on since 1952 (sans 1964)

The real key is to see who Dubya "annoints" two years from now.

I'd rather we come up with a better way to determine who gets the nod. We really need to get a conservative in the WH in 2008. President Bush is good, but, at least from an government/federal standpoint, he is not a conservative, and many of those around him aren't either. We need somebody who is really going to work on the size of the federal government, and who is going to call Congress out on much of the pork it passes. I would like to think President Bush would, especially since we increased our lead in Congress, however I don't see that happening since many Republicans in Congress are not as conservative as they should be.

Before anybody gets the flamethrower out, I'm not saying President Bush is bad, he has done what he needed to do to get elected again, and this past election is the fourth time I've voted for him. I would just prefer somebody that would try to reverse the trends in government size and spending.
