I do not like that ugly blue line snaking up the Mississippi River. Must be university towns. Probably concentration of African Americans, like that band running East-West from western GA, through AL to MS. A Southerner would know better than I.

You are indeed correct about the east-west line through Alabama. That is what is known in state politics as "the black belt" and I don't think it derives from any racial connotation. An Alabama native would know for sure but I think it has to do with soil deposits.
