Dayton- A shotgun, two rifles and a submachine gun were stolen from the pickup of a police SWAT team member.
"We need those weapons back," said Lt. Bob Chabali, commander of the Dayton-Montgomery County Regional Special Weapons and Tactics Team. "Those weapons are used for the safety of the community. In the wrong hands, they're a menace."
Authorities said Friday they did not have any suspects.
Officer Gary Huber had parked his truck Thursday night under a light outside a restaurant where he had stopped to eat after SWAT team practice, Chabali said. Huber later discovered someone had broken into his truck.
Chabali called Huber is a "very mature and solid officer," and said he probably would not be disciplined.
Huber's guns had been put in storage boxes, which were concealed in the back of the cab in his locked truck, officials said.
The weapons, some of which are not available to civilians without federal firearms dealer licenses, were listed as stolen in national databases, so no one would be able to pawn them, Huber Heights assistant police Chief Jim Borland said.
Well, that's one way to get weapons, and hide them and have them ready for the upcoming Civil War... Bet it was an "inside job"...
than how did the crooks know they were there?
just damnable?
Really great job of concealment!

Dereliction of duty. Barney Fife award.
Cops have no business playing Army. We have a war in Iraq which would be more than theraputic if they get all tingly firing machine guns and throwing grenades. Last I knew, they're still hiring.
This happens a lot, I've heard the MO described by several folks who've had guns stolen.
Smart bad guys case range, shooting match, or training area, and follow the mark out, to a restaurant or more often, hotel.
Wait for the driver to exit, and boom.
Whoever stole the guns knew exactly what they were after.
This is why military regulations prohibit weapons in private vehicles.
Heh. In Santa Cruz some bold thief stole an MP-5 out of the trunk of a marked patrol car in the police department parking lot.
Also look for any community which may be disbanding or consolidating "Special Services Units"(SWAT is out of vogue) to have an incredible series of "thefts" of the gear.
This was likely a private truck, many rural PD's allow officers to carry SRT weapons their personal vehicles, to permit rapid response to crisis.
I would love to get my hands on an MP-5 on day!
Our policing structure by design is to fill out paperwork and respond to a crime after the fact. The notion that cops are some sort of rapid response unit that can save the community from some lethal evil is just silly. As a matter of fact I would conclude that cops arriving at a scene in a hurry with automatic weapons is at best dangerous to the cops until the scene is secure and a command center is functioning.
We don't even appreciate cops chasing cars thru our neighborhoods at 100mph to chase some guy who's had two beers and is behind on his child support. I hardly think we can boost that trust level to add automatic weapons. I want cops to go home safely and in one chunk at the end of their day's work.
In the right hands, they're "freebies"!
Occam's Razor of Brilliance Award, this year goes to......The Dentist!
I went up to the Machine Gun Shoot in Nevada explicitly to shoot an MP-5. Unfortunately that gun was not there that day. I was disappointed and had to settle for a silenced Uzi with the foregrip. Quite surprised at how well it handled. I took my 16 year-old nephew, whom I am raising up, with me as a treat for good grades. The kid had never shot a gun before and his first time out gets to shoot a M-60. Whoot! Talk about jumping into the deep end of the pool.

I remember Nigel of Spinal Tap fame explaining "There's such a thin thin line between brilliance and stupidity."
Here in NC, some Raleigh cops on the way for training in Wilson lost an MP-5 when it FELL OUT OF THE BACK OF THEIR PICKUP.
I swear I'm not kidding.
And believe it or not, some honest Tarheel turned it in.
