NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and Army troops punched their way into northeastern Fallujah on Monday, kicking off a massive assault dubbed Operation Phantom Fury that seeks to put an end to half a year of insurgent control of the Sunni Muslim city.

The prelude to the assault on the Askari neighborhood was a crushing air and artillery bombardment of the city that rose to a crescendo by Monday evening, with U.S. strike jets dropping bombs around the clock and big guns pounding the city every few minutes with high-explosive shells.

Meanwhile, insurgents in Baghdad and nearby Ramadi tried to keep up the pressure on the coalition forces with new attacks, including one on a Catholic church in the capital.

Earlier Monday U.S. troops had fought their way into the city's western outskirts, seizing two bridges over the Euphrates River and helping Iraqi soldiers take the city's main hospital in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold.

Civilians...men over the age of 45 years old and all women and children were advised to leave the weeks ago. They have been doing so. I heard an estimate that only 30,000 to 40,000 were still in Fallujah.

They are ALL TABLOID-MINDSET SELLOUTS.

Fox TV, too.

We need to start our own NATIONAL CABLE TV NETWORK, bring over seasoned reporters, but have an editorial policy that would keep OUR TROOPS IN HOT BATTLE IN A CRITICAL COUNTRY at the top of the news cycle, and not some murder trial in California. Shame on America. I don't think that is what they prefer to view, but if so, shame on them then.

Exactly, someday the US will be gone from Iraq. Heck I don't care if the Iraqis set up a new dictatorship as long as they leave the US and their neighbors alone.

The Iraqis either step up and support democracy or not. We are giving them this chance. The ought to look at Germany and see the benefits of long term US military installations.

Russia's NTV channel showed pictures of scorched bodies, some clad in camouflage gear and some still clinging to their AK-47s, piled in front of a brick building, with Russian soldiers silently picking through them.

November is turning out to be a Really good month!
