The New York Times' Maureen Dowd, who in her first postelection column last week accused President Bush of "dividing the country along fault lines of fear, intolerance, ignorance and religious rule," apparently thinks she went too easy on the Republican. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that her second postelection column, published yesterday, bordered on the hysterical.
"Just how much did Karl Rove hate not being one of the cool guys in high school in the '60s? Enough to hatch schemes to marshal the forces of darkness to take over the country?" Miss Dowd asked.
"Oh, yeah," she answered.
The columnist added: "W.'s presidency rushes backward, stifling possibilities, stirring intolerance, confusing church with state, blowing off the world, replacing science with religion, and facts with faith. We're entering another dark age, more creationist than cutting edge, more premodern than postmodern. Instead of leading America to an exciting new reality, the Bushies cocoon in a scary, paranoid, regressive reality. Their new health care plan will probably be a return to leeches.
"America has always had strains of isolationism, nativism, chauvinism, puritanism and religious fanaticism. But most of our leaders, even our devout presidents, have tried to keep these impulses under control. Not this crew. They don't call to our better angels; they summon our nasty devils."
Miss Dowd repeated some of this yesterday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Her conservative colleague, William Safire, appeared on the program with her, and gently assured Miss Dowd that everything would be OK, and that someday the Democrats will return to power.

She also said Condi doesn't do anything, except workout with Bush.
Soon, we will see front and center the real reactionaries in the American political system. When Bush attempts to initiate Social Security reform Democrats will act as if he is desecrating the grave of Saint FDR.
She's over 50.
Mmmmmm. The reason I always click in to a Maureen Dowd post.
yeah--just like Mayor Koch, Ron Silver and other Democrats... but yes, Zell is still a Democrat... at least Zell didn't do what Jeffords did: run as one party, win the election, AND THEN switch...
when did Zell change parties? he is still a Democrat, isn't he?
Probably a favorite toy as well....Ahhh let me explain...like a remote control for the TV or palm pilot or stuff like that. What did ya'll think I meant?.....
She's 52, Birth: 14 January 1952

Heck, I'd Zellously shell-out a few bucks to see more Catherine (and less Dowdy NY matrons!) any day!
OY that is scary looking....
I saw her with Safire. You know she doesn't hit me as that smart. She speaks in this lazy, monotone kind of voice that is void of any passion for what she is saying.
But seriously, the only place I have ever seen Zell referred to in that manner is the DUmp. I guess for people who have never read over there, you wouldn't know.
So, I am begging forgiveness here :)
...and not to forget, the older, uglier, wicked witch of the east, Molly, I can't write one simple sentence without bad-mouthing President Bush or his family, Ivins. Certain women don't need to be Journalists, politicians, lawyers, or anything else that brings out their bestial qualities. These poor folks are suffering greatly by attempting to escape their true destiny as women.
Yep, I watched that too. MoDo showed us all who she really is. A sour little Frump. Nothing seems to work out for her anymore. Boo Hoo ....
So, you despise a man who may be the only honest Democrat in his whole corrupt party? A veteran, a Marine, man of honor who finally had enough and had the guts to say so to the whole world? Why continue to support people who are taking your Party, and possibly your COUNTRY, down in flames?
He may have been a deciding factor for thousands of people to vote for GWB!
Read Zell's book. He changed from the Dems when they made a Union position out of Homeland Security. That was in 2001-2002.
He is indeed and has made it plain that he isn't about to change parties, it is the election winning democrat party that left him, and his duty is to restore the party of yesteryear.
Meant "changed from the Dems position..."
Pray for W and Our Troops
