"Incredibly, Democratic leaders and the media didn't see this coming, though polls keep showing opposition to gay marriage of around 60 percent."
That IS pretty incredible. I guess it shows they are so focused on winning the prize of power, they've forgotten about the political game they have to play to win it.
LOL, it is really gratifying in a way, they are stuck in the MSM echo-chamber. Let's hope they never get out!

The people cared about morals and values. The left seem to be strongly lacking in both, so they used Viet Nam to attack Iraq! (makes sense to me! LOL)

I told my dinner companions the Republican Party is a weak vessel, with lots of movers and shakers who seem to care only about greed, He left out power. He also left out that the Dem party also has more than its share. Politics has always attracted and always will attract a disproportionate share of people like that. Of course, Dems are way more likely to loudly proclaim altruism as their only motive. (What was that line? "The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted the spoons.")
Excellent column though -- can't imagine the Dems will take it to heart!

Do the Dems even know what moral values are?

The other thing the Democrats might do is to acquire a copy of Thomas Frank's book What's the Matter With Kansas? and then ignore everything he says. How strange that Leo should mention Frank and his tepid tome -- the liberals who were "soul searching" last week through their clenched teeth were citing Frank's flawed philosophy in explaining away the supposed myth of the heartland's values.

Not quite right. 60% support a constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage. 75% are oppose gay marriage.
It a much bigger issue than described here.
Another majority issue is partial birth abortion. Only 23% support it -- yet they nominate a dweeb that voted for it continuation...unabated!
The BEST question is (as I would put it): How are the democrats going to become the majority party given that they oppose the majority?
They just don't get it!!! They STILL think they are the majority...I kid you not. When I read the DUmmie boards, or listen to the "Activists", they are now saying "we have to go farther LEFT"!
If they keep going left, they are going to end up asking the Green Party to let them on the ballot!

There was an interesting debate on Thomas Frank's ideas on the History News Network some months ago. It's a site that caters to History professors. Most of the liberals there argued basically that "You are ignorant. Your belief system is merely superstition. You MUST listen to your betters."
Very few seemed to understand that belittling other people for their beliefs is bigotry that will cause a backlash.
