Paramount's "Alfie," a remake of a romantic comedy about a roguish womanizer starring Jude Law, opened to a dismal $6.5 million in more than 2,000 theaters, far below expectations. The tepid response was the latest blow to Sherry Lansing, the chairwoman of Paramount who last week announced her plans to leave the job when her contract expires in 2005, and whose movies have performed poorly this summer and fall.
Wayne Llewellyn, the president of distribution at Paramount, said that the conservative ethos reflected in last week's election results might have hurt the film.
"It could be the mood of the country right now," he said. "It seems to be the result of the election. Maybe they didn't want to see a guy that slept around."
'About this thread: what's it all about?'
You might want to ask the Liberal pinheads at Paramount.
I read the reviews on this film and they say it has no focus. The original Alfie was forced to confront his selfish behavior. According to Hollywood's perception of current American morals, today's Alfie doesn't have anything to apologize for. He certainly wouldn't weep at the sight of an aborted fetus, as in the original.
Ha ha! I'm leaving it!
To paraphrase Gov. Schwarzenegger, "Why should we go see losers?"
The entertainment establishment in this country is so lacking in originality and creativity that they have to keep trying to remake classics like "Alfie" instead of coming up with imaginative and innovative productions - they deserve to lose money......
More bullsqueeze from the leftist MSM.
America blames paramount for making crap movies with "celebrities" that should open their minds not their mouths.
Once again, Hollywood tries to remake a classic Michael Caine film and fails. First the Italian Job, now Alfie. What next a remake of Zulu with Ben Affleck?
I forgive Paramount. They released "Team America", and are releasing "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie" in 2 weeks.
I'm sorry, but Jude Law looks too damn Queer to be a leading man.
There is no doubt in my mind that this guy makes mega bucks.
If I were on the board of directors at Paramount I would have voted to fire him on the spot for this stupid statement.
He has absolutely no clue why this movie failed and has proven he is incompetent and is simply sucking money from the company by merely showing up for work.
Perhaps we all just have more to do than line the pockets of these big-mouthed liberals. Let's keep it up until they figure it out. It will take a while, you know. They're actors. Not known for their brains!
In the version I saw, Alife is boffing his way through the female population and the message seems to be "What a jerk; he won't just pick one and settle down." But near the end Alfie meets this old man whose wife has just died. At one point, Alfie indicates that he wouldn't stay with a woman who is having another man's child. (This comes up because he's knocked up his best friend's woman and is amazed that the guy is staying with her, regardless.) And this old man says, "Don't say you'd never do that. You don't know WHAT you'll do till you really love someone."
So either the point is "Pick a lane and drive," or the point is "He's just never found the right woman." Now... see how these two points just do not work together? You can't espouse a Romantic swept-off-your-feet position and a coldly rational just-make-up-your-mind-and-do-it position at the same time. It just doesn't make sense.
But did they listen to me? NOOOOooooo... I also told them to cut Sarandon's part right out. It was superfluous. I mean, I hate her, but it *really was* superfluous.
Lady, there is a reason that 75% of your profits are from over seas distribution. Go back to sleep now.
I don't know who thought Jude Law was romantic leading man material, but it seems to me bad casting is the first problem with the film. It probably goes downhill from there.
Brilliant, fiery and to the point. I so needed your analysis of what is at stake for the Hollywood idiots. May the get what they deserve.
She hires me and her troubles are over.
With Michael Caine (an actor) in the tile roll, you came quickly to detest "Alfie" and root for his downfall. In the age of moral ambiguity, you have to "see both sides". I wouldn't se a remake of this on a bet.
Even the liberal reviewer in our local newspaper did not like the film. She believed it to be poorly done and just face time.
What's the next re-make? Georgie Girl? To Sir with Love? The Sterile Cuckoo?
