Shoppers rush to pyramid Wal-Mart

Shoppers flocked to the opening of the new store

Bargain-hungry Mexican shoppers have flocked to a new Wal-Mart supermarket that environmentalists claim will threaten one of the nation's treasures.

Around 200 shoppers queued for hours to be the first to enter the store, which is half a mile from the ancient Mexican pyramids at Teotihuacan.

"People need the well-being of their families more than culture," said one.

Environmental groups had argued that the store was too close to the ruins and would erode the local way of life.

While the Wal-Mart store was overflowing with shoppers on its opening day, a handful of local opponents kept a vigil outside the 2,000-year-old Teotihuacan pyramids.

They pledged to continue a protest that has drawn international attention and prompted a national debate.

Buffer zone

"It's like planting the staff of globalization in the heart of ancient Mexico," said Homero Aridjis, a writer and environmentalist who led a national drive to block the store.

"It is supremely symbolic."

Mexico's national anthropology institute that oversees the ruins - located outside Mexico City - has said that the store poses no threat.

The United Nations and the Paris-based International Council on Monuments and Sites also "signed-off" the store.

It is located in a buffer zone that is part of the archaeological site, but where hundreds of other, mainly smaller businesses have sprouted in the past decade or more.

Environmental groups had argued that the store...would erode the local way of life.

Yeah, by raising their standard of living, and by exposing them to new products, new ideas, and new expectations in life. But then we can't have that, can we?

Old crumbling buildings and animals are more important to the liberals than people. Ask the South Africans about that, the Sudanese,etc.etc.etc.

I have to say, a 1/2 mile does sound kind of close, aesthetically speaking.

"Teotihuacan pyramids."

They've been there 2000 years.

I love WalMart, but will that franchise exist in 100 years?

The crumbling ruins will persist.

BTW, when I was 14 I bought some beautiful raw jelly opals and half an ounce of ditch weed on the the top of the Pyramid of the Sun.

I've still got the opals.

People should be free to live in destitute poverty, but not free to shop at Wal-Mart? I don't get it. The environmentalist offer another telling peek into their disgusting souls on this one. Their argument is against progress, not saving the environment.

Isn't it a little late to be beotchin' about it NOW? The Wally World is open, for cryin' out loud!

Environmentalists????? For God's sake! The original contruction/environmental distruction occurred thousands of years ago. If the eco-wackos had been there then, they would have been sacrificed to the Aztec Gods.

Yeah, it is disturbing isn't it

Guy looks like he's got some upper body strength though.

I'm concerned by the fact that he works in women's intimates.
