Specter was asked twice if the President had a mandate. Specter hemmed and hawed with the first answer...then when pressed said the President does not have a mandate.

The example of a president who "had a mandate" ............Specter said FDR!

Why in the hell did he not say Ronald Reagan, if he was too Marxist to say George Bush 2004?

Slap the "D" label on him, force him to switch parties, and send him packing...and take Chafee and Hagel with you.

What did Spector say about his previous comments?

Did he retract them?

to defend spector a little, just a little, also blame the talk show for forcing the question twice, any guest would try to make the host lay off with a somewhat condesending answer..it would not have been asked by Fox news

The replacements for Collins and Snowe from a Kerry state like Maine would be rabid communists. We're oddly lucky to have them.

I'm not sure Specter ever really switched TO the Rep. party, back in the 60s.

See post 59.

But he IS a Republican.
What is his record in the past?
Has he suddenly turned or has this been going on for a while?
Did the GOP see this coming?

Whats going on here? Will there be others who will turn?
Maybe we should let this play itself out and see whats really happening, if we jump to soon we may not weed the others out lurking around. IF there are others.

:') "the most serious misjudgment the GOP made" -- the network decides who appears on the network, not the RP. Specter is widely believed to be up for a committee chairmanship.

This is double plus ungood. Not only does he not believe it, but his comments will bolster the Dems opposition. He needs to be no more than a back bencher on the committee to study migratory rodents.

If President Bush does not have a mandate, then who does? And if there is no mandate now, then what would be the conditions by which a mandate is declared?

Stumping for Spector was a huge mistake.

I orginally stuck up for Bush, and his stumping for Specter. I like and admire loyalty, and would have had a problem if President Bush had supported Toomey, after Specter had lent him his support when he was up at bat in 2000. You stand up for people who stood up for you, it's only right and proper.

However, knowing what I know now, it was a mistake. President Bush did the right thing and remained steadfast and loyal. He returned the favor, Specter won the seat, and then promptly knifed the president in the back. This is probably Arlen's last term too, so he'll take the gloves completely off and really make things difficult. I guess we should be thankful that the senate isn't close enough for him to pull a Jeffords.

"This just in - "Specter Shoots Self In Other Foot""

Specter's strongest point is his weakest. . .and he is too old for an 'attitude adjustment'; not to mention what Specter owes his kick-Bush, benefactors.

Time for Bush to show Specter how his 'weakness' really translates.

[disregard 'other' posting - I know I should not post and talk on phone. . ;^*]

But he IS a Republican.

He started as a Democrat.

What is his record in the past?

He Borked Bork. He invented the Magic Bullet Theory. He apologized for getting Clarence Thomas appointed. He voted "Not Proven" in the impeachment of Clinton.

Has he suddenly turned or has this been going on for a while?

It's been well-known since the beginning of his public life that Specter is a Democrat at heart.

Did the GOP see this coming?

Yes.
