BUSH'S WIN ADDS TO SEATTLE'S GLOOM
MOOD-CRUSHING WINTERTIME ARRIVES, AND JOLT OF COFFEE MAY NOT HELP
By Blaine Harden
Washington Post
SEATTLE - It has been a SAD week in Seattle, city of rain, darkness, caffeine, secularism and an 82 percent majority that voted in vain to fire President Bush.
SAD, as just about everybody here knows, is an acronym for seasonal affective disorder, the mood-crushing curse of wintertime existence in the northernmost major U.S. city in the Lower 48. An estimated 20 to 30 percent of residents experience some degree of the disorder, which researchers believe is triggered by the body's reaction to reduced natural light. Symptoms include sadness, irritability, gluttony, weight gain, menstrual difficulties and interpersonal strain.
As expected, suffering began last Sunday, with the end of daylight-saving time. Like a guillotine blade, darkness fell at 5 in the afternoon. It was the pitiless annual reminder that by midwinter, there would barely be eight hours of daylight, almost all of it sponged up by thick blankets of concrete-colored clouds that, on average, squat over Seattle 226 days a year.
The next day, election eve, it rained hard. The wind blew, roofs leaked, basements flooded and Seattle seemed to slip irretrievably into the dank funk that has given birth to the SAD resistance movement, otherwise known as excessive caffeine consumption. That movement gave birth to Starbucks and scores of other, lesser-known local purveyors of overpriced coffee.

As election returns sank in, the city's seasonal slough of despond seemed to deepen. A local public radio talk show kicked off a lugubrious afternoon of post-election whining with a saxophone solo of ``Am I Blue?'' Several callers said they would be moving to nearby British Columbia.

This is Dr. Frasier Crane.....I'm listening.
I doubt it. Spoiled children whine, but never actually do anything.
That's okay - good for the coffee business.
Pass out rope and razor blades.
Hey, you gotta get over it
Hey, you gotta get over it
It's too bad I'm not sad
It's casting over
It's just one of those things
You'll have to get over it
What these girlymen need is a bracing Canadian winter. The golden opportunities waiting for them in Canada will make those ceramicists, street performers, mimes and interpretive dancers sit up and take notice. Canada has a desperate shortage of these plus a crying need for more lesbian poets, herbal healers and aroma therapists too. Liberal arts graduates from really progressive universities are dazzled with big bucks by generous Canadian industries. Canada's socialist economy will shower immigrants with tons of free stuff. Homosexual don't have to worry about expensive medicines for their AIDS infected lovers either, the Canadian health care system is happy to provide everything they need. Don't delay, disgruntled liberals, Canada Wants You!
Maybe Seattle wasn't meant to survive:-)
Dublin, where I grew up, has 6 hours daylight in midwinter; and as for clouds, no one does overcast like Ireland. And yet, how often do you hear the Irish whining?
ping....bring yer meds.

Yours sir...is my nomination for post of the week.
I have a feeling that Seattle is really over the election, but the ones who are still "gloomy" are the Mass Media..Washington Post, Seattle Times, The Lone Star Iconoclast.......bwaaaaaaaaaaahhahaaaaaaaa....SORELOSERS...
Seattle people like to say, "Tell everybody how terrible it is here .. how much it rains, how much you hate it. That way, they won't move here." Seattle has a much more pleasant daytime than California .. the sunlight is softer, more filtered by the atmosphere, and easier on the eyes.
That IS best!LOL
Maybe they should all commit suicide.
"Yes! Yesss!! Oh, let me taste your tears, Seattle...mm, your tears are so yummy and sweet. Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness! My-ymmuy."
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
Wie oft hat schon zur Winterszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!
O Schadenfreude, O Schadenfreude,
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
But don't they have outrageously high rates of alcoholism and suicide?
Gloom descends on the great liberal Mecca.
Seattle is controlled by government and labor unions. Like San Francisco there is also a large gay contingent that resists a cultural change to moral conservatism.
To the south of Seattle lie pockets of disgruntled blue collar neighborhoods. Decades of layoffs and hiring booms have left a population accustomed to seeking often frivolous disability and freebie subsidies from the state.
Along the Seattle side of Lake Washington and along the north side of the City facing the Puget Sound are a new demographic of more conservative minded families and young professionals. They choose to live in Seattle to avoid the long commutes from the eastside of Bellevue-Redmond-Kirkland. They keep their politics silent out of fear of getting into confrontation with very vocal liberals.
The University of Washington lies more to the northend of Lake Washington and by a cut leading ultimately to the Puget Sound. It supports fringe groups that border on terrorist cells.
Abortion issues keep women voting democrat. In my opinion many of these women had abortions early because of loose morals and need the democrat party platform to soothe their angst about how thay 'corrected' their mistake. Roe vs. Wade provides them an affirmation that they are in some sort of mainstream of national consciousness.
No idea how the perspectives of pro-abortion women will ever change since they see Christians as opposed to their 'mistake' of getting pregnant. They fear Christians.
Many such women in their 40s and 50s say they got married because they got pregnant and they are bitter that they married too young and often to a man who could not care for them while suffering layoffs repeatedly with the boom and bust cycle of Boeing and their many subcontractors.
Seattle's economy is now more diversified but lags in employment because of an unfriendly business environment. The rest of the state appears to be 'getting it' but the city of Seattle is stuck in liberal mud.
