Bailey overcomes dog bite to retain House seat

Associated Press

ST. GEORGE, S.C. - Rep. George Bailey celebrated twice Tuesday - first when he got his final rabies shot after being bitten by a dog while campaigning and again when he retained his House seat.

Bailey had to run hard after Democrats targeted him for defeat following his switch to the Republican party in March.

He beat challenger Lachlan McIntosh by 473 votes in the seat that covers a good part of Dorchester County.

Election Day also marked the end of rabies treatment for the longtime lawmaker, who was bitten by a stray dog while campaigning in early October.

The dog nipped Bailey on the leg after he left some of his campaign literature at a home in the town of Dorchester, then followed him to a couple of other houses. By the time Bailey realized the bite had broken his skin, the dog had run away.

Bailey looked for the stray dog for hours. But he couldn't find the animal, forcing the 67-year-old lawmaker to get treatment for rabies.

"There were nine shots. The first five were terrible; don't even go there. I had five at one time, and it was terrible," Bailey said. "The last of the four were little bitty stings."

But with the shots over and another two-year term secure, Bailey can laugh about the incident. For one thing, he said he's not sure if it was a yellow dog Democrat that bit him.

He then added, "I have no comment to the report that the dog crawled off and died because he bit a politician."

Glad to see you were able to combine "when animals attack" with a political story. :)

I like his attitude.

Per the old joke about the lost-dog notice, does he now answer to "Lucky"?

DOCTER: Okay.

ELAINE: Okay? That's it? I don't need a shot?

DOCTER: Not shot, dog bite.

ELAINE: No, no, no. I know I wasn't shot. Do I need a shot?

DOCTER: Not shot, dog bite. Woof woof, not bang bang.

Fortunately, the voters were better disposed to Bailey than the dog.
