Tuesday, the prized U.S. Senate seat wrested away from McGovern by Abdnor in 1980 and regained by Daschle in 1986 passed to Abdnors protégé, John Thune.
There is some irony in all of this. Abdnor, a common and salt-of-the-earth man who made up in honesty and principle what he lacked in oratory skills, defeated the states best known politician and its most famous native son. Now Daschle, minority leader of the Senate and the Democrats most powerful member of Congress, has been retired by Abdnors disciple, Thune.
If there is any poetic justice in this for Abdnor, hes not admitting it. Instead of acknowledging any special pleasure in Daschles defeat, Abdnor focused on Thunes quality as a candidate.
Hes going to make a great senator, Abdnor said. Hes got talents like Ive not seen in many guys. Hes smart, and a down to earth, common guy.
Some say losing touch with South Dakota caused McGoverns downfall in 1980. But that wasnt the case with Daschle, who visited the state often, and prided himself on visiting every county once a year. In fact, Daschles campaign used a quote attributed to Abdnor that said, Tom doesnt forget South Dakota.
Abdnor denies saying it.
It was not an accurate quote, Abdnor said. A woman (New York Times Magazine reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg) calls up and wants to do an interview. She didnt use much of it. She said to me, When you ran against McGovern, part of your program was that McGovern had forgotten South Dakota. Is Daschle different? And I said, He comes home more often. The next election, Im going to tell people Im going to have a recorder on.

Its even worse than you think, you can run a search of my postings during the campaign and see that Tommy's kid was also a bagman, receiving moolah from such distinguished personages as Ted "The Unconvicted Murderer" Kennedy.
Heh... ya might just have a point there.
MUCH easier.
I think he's rather good looking.
>Now that he is unemployed, how is he going to pay for his new multi-million dollar home. His wife is also going to be unemployed soon. How they going to make ends meet?
Not to worry. Tiny Tommies set for life due to his Senate career courtesy of the taxpayers. I would expect at least $100K plus free health insurance for life, etc.
This plus whatever crumbs he can pick up lobbying and speaking to lib groups should cover expenses nicely.
Thanks.
Now I'll have something worth reading tonight!
What's not been stated is perhaps the ultimate irony..Daschle mobilized the SD Dem machine to gin up the votes from the Indian reservations to somehow defeat Thune in 2002. Thune was the only SD Republican who could have defeated Daschle..So, if Daschle hadn't cooked the 202 election, he'd still have his seat in the Sdenate..Payback's a bitch, eh..
You're exactly right. And I'll bet tiny tommy has been kicking himself for about a month now.
Is that right?
It was Dashole's doing?
HA!
I love it.
let's see how soon tom zooms out of SD to find a place where he can have power and influence.
i will take that as the extreme insult!
He has a job next time Hollyweird remakes "The Blob"
I agree that Thune is a rising star. I too was amazed at the way that Thune very carefully, wisely, reasonably, but RUTHLESSLY destroyed Daschle any time the two of them apperaed together. Thune was phenomenal to watch. He dismanteled a veteran Senator. Not something easlily done. The boy has a future.
If he got an A from a liberal professor he may be smart to just forget showing that paper around.
To my ex-husband, or dasshole????
this is a loaded question. i should know better than to get in the middle of discussion about a fine woman and her ex. i need help......(insult was meant to the latter).
