Saudi scholars back Jihad against US forces in Iraq

BEIRUT: Prominent Saudi religious scholars have called on Iraqis to support militants waging holy war against the US-led coalition forces, saying fighting the occupation was a duty and a right.

In an open letter addressed to the Iraqi people and posted on the Internet on Saturday, 26 Saudi scholars and religious preachers stressed that armed attacks launched by militant Iraqi groups on US troops and their allies in Iraq were ‘legitimate’. The statement came as US troops, backed by air and artillery power, were gearing up for a major assault on the militant stronghold of Fallujah.

The scholars, some of whom have been criticised in the past for their extremist views, issued a Fatwa, or religious edict, prohibiting Iraqis from offering any support for military operations carried out by US forces against militant strongholds. "Fighting the occupiers is a duty for all those who are able. It is a Jihad (holy war) to push back the assailants,’’ said the letter dated November 5. "Resistance is a legitimate right. A Muslim must not inflict harm on any resistance man or inform about them. Instead, they should be supported and protected,’’ it said.

Saudi officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Among the 26 scholars who signed the letter are influential clerics Sheik Safar al-Hawali, Sheik Nasser al-Omar, Sheik Salman al-Awdah, Sheik Sharif Hatem al-Aouni and Sheik Awad al-Qarni.

You're either with us or against us. If you're against us, you're a legitimate target.

It's nice they signed their names to the document. It will make it easier to capture them and send them to Gitmo.

Extremists aren't scholars, but it'll likely be reported in our MSM as being such.

Zarguna issues Fuq' waad: "I hereby decree that these "scholars" are all Fuq' waads."

"Fighting Saudi whackjobs is a duty for all those who are able. "

Have fun, boys.

When you strip away all the BS, the root cause of the war on terror is these clerics. Osama himself was just a rich playboy before they got hold of him. Funded by Saudi oil money, they have spread their message of extremism and hate all over the world. Forty years ago, no one considered Islam a threat--it is in the newly built mosques and madrassas that these clerics have trained a new generation of fanatics.

How do you stop it? First, shut off the funding. At best, this involves a "come to Jesus" session with the Saudi Royals, laying out the consequences once and for all of their two-faced game. At worst, it may require taking over the oil fields. Second, bring the war to these clerics. I am convinced that most are cowards whose only talent is persuading others to die for Allah. If you start assassinating the most vocal ones in a very public and obvious way, the rest may get the message. This tactic is likely repugnant to most Americans, but the fact is that we are in a clash of (religious) cultures. The sooner we wake up to this and act pragmatically, the sooner it will be over.

You are correct.

Clausewitz would define it as the "center of gravity".

But we have to get there before the Chinese do. Their thirst for oil is growing exponentially. It will ignite the next major power play.

We must develop another source of energy quickly for this catastrophe to be averted.
