I've often thought that a "hippogriff" like Buckbeak (head, wings, and claws of an eagle, body of a horse) is a good image for our military. Smart, strong, proud, and capable of traveling great distances on the ground or in the air and doing a lot of serious damage when it arrives.
Don't forget the part about not speaking bad about them unless you want to incur a mighty painful wrath!
