Jacques Chirac, the French president, yesterday threatened to reopen transatlantic rifts between the EU and the US over the war in Iraq by ignoring Tony Blair's plea for Europeans to "face up to the reality" of George Bush's resounding re-election as American president.
Mr Chirac compounded his opposition to appeals for closer cooperation between the US and Europe in Mr Bush's second term by snubbing an EU summit lunch for Ayad Allawi, Iraq's interim prime minister, and urging Europe to act as a counterweight to American hegemony "in a world that's more multi-polar than ever".

".....and urging Europe to act as a counterweight to American hegemony" I wonder how, exactly, Chirac and his impotent Euro buddies plan on doing this?

Anybody know when Chirac's term is up,when he is up for re-election, or is he just a dictator now? Jeez!

"in a world that's more multi-polar than ever". Let's see, if my public education didn't fail me, I only remember a North and South pole. Where are the other poles?

Our enemies deserve economic sanctions.
France is not our friend.

Fine by me. We're safer without France as an ally.
France always betrays her allies. Every. Single. Time.

Maybe Bush should name Arlen Specter the U.S. Ambassador to France. Jacques and Arlen would really hit it off.

I'm not a Billl O'Reilly fanatic, but we all should follow his advice to apply pressure on France and boycott French products. Lets see how the "Frog King" deals with a depressed French economy?

If Yasser does have Aids my bet is that in about 5 years Chirac becomes ill with a "mysterious illness".

It seems as though Chirac either knows or suspects that we have found something in Iraq that is so damning to them that there is no hope of reconciliation. Something that we have only seen the edges of.Something bigger than oil for food or the weaponry discovered so far.

"It is clear that Europe, now more than ever, has the need, the necessity, to strengthen its dynamism and unity when faced with this great world power," he said. He added: "That's the goal of the constitution in a world that's more multi-polar than ever ... We must reinforce Europe politically and economically and make sure European cohesion is seen as an international reality."
This is one of Chirac's clearest statements yet that he sees strengthening the EU not as beneficial in its own right, but solely as a means to confront the United States. What a jerk!
