6000 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles missing
The Age ^ | 11.06.04

bout 6000 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles are outside the control of any government worldwide, according to The New York Times. The number is triple the previous estimate of 2000 missing arms, and about 4000 of the weapons are said to be from Iraq's pre-war arsenals. The new estimate was discussed at a closed Defence Intelligence Agency conference in Alabama last week on the threat posed by the portable missiles to civil aviation, the newspaper said. Western intelligence and security officials have warned in recent months about the danger of attack by al-Qaeda operatives on civilian planes, similar to the 2002 near-hit on an Israeli aircraft leaving Mombasa, Kenya. The weapons, which are about 1.5 metres long, reportedly fetch a minimum of $US5000 ($A6600) on the black market. The new estimate of missing weapons appears to be in line with an estimate by the US Congressional Research Service that Iraqi insurgents could have 4,000 to 5,000 shoulder-fired missiles.

Kerry has them in Ohio for duck hunting. That's why he wasn't carrying anything out of the woods while his hunting "buddies" were.

Some day, the main stream media will understand that they aren't going to pick our leaders any more.

The poor old Slimes is backsliding so fast, since their blatant exposure during this election, they are now grasping at straws...oh, don't worry Slimes, there are still plenty of brain-deads that want to read your biased, leftist news...

SHELF LIFE

How many of these weapons are beyond their 10 year shelf life?

What have the storage conditions been?

From the very first words I just knew this was a New York Slimes screed.

If we're lucky they'll go back to worrying the issue of women at Augusta National Golf Club.

I'm still missing a block of firecrackers I bought in 1998. Should I alert the NYT and blame the Clinton Administration?

Hmmm...let's see, 6000 SAM's x $5,000 on the black market = $30 million, about the cost of one F-16, and way, way less than the cost of one of our guys. Maybe we should just buy them all.

It's why every a/c equipped with them deploys them
whenever at low altitude; bombing, landing, departing.
Unfortunately, not all a/c have them:

Working in our favor is that some skill and training
is required to use these weapons effectively:

And the batteries they rely on have a finite shelf life.

Black Market
4600 Waverly Ave.
Garrett Park, MD 20896
301-933-3000

You'll feel like you've stepped into Pottery Barn at Black Market, with its celadon walls, hardwood floors and painted black tables and chairs. But the feeling of visiting Pleasantville starts as you make your way past gingerbread (actually Victorian) houses in idyllic Garrett Park. Black Market is a morning stop for coffee and a muffin on the way to the MARC train (the tracks are steps away), a lunchtime meeting place for neighbors and an intimate way to spend an evening. The two rooms that make up the 50-seat restaurant are inside Penn Place, a restored building that also houses the town's post office
