New 'brain' teaser: N-word in ads
New York Daily News ^ | 11/06/04 | KATHLEEN LUCADAMO

The salacious advertisements being stripped off scores of city buses and subway platforms for their hidden sexual message also contain a secret reference to the N-word.

Stamped faintly below the logo for the ads' sponsor, the hip-hop clothing line Akademiks, are the initials "H.N.I.C." - slang for "Head [N-----] In Charge."

A subway operator spotted the offensive acronym and alerted the Daily News yesterday.

"It's sad, it really is," said the L-train operator, who asked not to be identified.

As The News first reported yesterday, Akademiks admitted to planting the slang for oral sex - "Get Brain" - into the same racy ads that supposedly encourage kids to read.

One of the bawdy ads - which declares "Read Books, Get Brain" - features a curvy, panty-clad woman on her knees, holding an open book.

In another ad, the young woman is sitting on a man's lap while he reads.

Red-faced MTA bosses, who initially missed the vulgar references in the logo, have been removing the ads from 118 buses and roughly a dozen subway platforms.

Akademiks also came clean on the N-word charge yesterday, explaining that double-meanings litter its ad campaign.

The company's design manager, Anthony Harrison, said the "N" in the acronym refers to "negotiator," but he acknowledged that the company was aware of the more common street translation for H.N.I.C.

"It's all word play," he said. "The C's in academics are changed to K's. It's a code that the streets and the consumers understand."

Akademiks creative director Emmet Harrell said he was upset that the MTA was yanking the ads, which he insists are just a clever way to promote literacy.

"They should embrace us and team up with us," said Harrell who balked at the idea of issuing a public apology. "Our consumers have loved it."

But MTA bosses have no regrets about their decision.

"I don't think there is a parent in the world who would appreciate them sinking to that level of gutter humor to appeal to their child," said MTA spokesman Tom Kelly.

"What they seem to forget is that every boy has a mother."

I thought it was "HNWIC:" Head Person What's In Charge.

Of course, there's the military version: "HMFWIC."

"They should embrace us and team up with us"

Typical elitist thinking by the Left. This is the same as what they are saying to the President after losing the elections.

Don't you hate it when newspaper and media who are supposed to be adults refer to it as "the N word" That is so absurd. It is like they are saying that this word is so evil and corrupting we dare not utter it. Give me a break.

LOL! They have tried to make the 'N' word verboten to the point you get double takes if you utter the word it was derived from (niggardly).

I flat refuse to forgo a perfectly good word because of a bunch of raging lingophobes!

Actually, they're not related at all.

niggardly:
1 : grudgingly mean about spending or granting : BEGRUDGING
2 : provided in meanly limited supply synonym see STINGY

nigger:
Etymology: alteration of earlier neger, from Middle French negre, from Spanish or Portuguese negro, from negro black, from Latin niger 1 usually offensive, see usage paragraph below : a black person

It's not derived from niggardly, which is probably Scandinavian influence. It is a distorted version of niger, or negro, which is Latin for dark or black.

The 'N' word and the word niggardly have nothing to do with one another etymologically. The first is from the Latin niger, or black and the second entered English from one of the Scandinavian languages, presumably Danish, as a result of the invasion and settlement of parts of England (the Danelaw?) by Vikings after the Romans left and before the Normans arrived with French to further modify the mother tongue.

OK, OK, my mistake. I should have said similar, not derived.

Guess that's what I get for posting without the required 2 cups of coffee!

Especially when you will find the F-word in print in "respectable" newspapers and on broadcast television.
