Mount St. Helens Sprouts Magma Extension
ABC ^ | 11/5/04 | ABC

Posted on 11/05/2004 8:33:41 PM PST by Jewels1091

The new lava lobe inside Mount St. Helens' crater has sprouted a piston-like protrusion the size of a 30-story building glowing red at night.

"The magma is pushing the plug upward. It's going high in the sky," said hydrologist Carolyn Driedger of the U.S. Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, about 50 miles from the southwestern Washington mountain.

One section of the new lobe has risen by 330 feet in the past nine days, Driedger said Friday. Exact dimensions are not yet known but will be determined from photos taken Thursday.

"It seems like every time you think you know what's going on, (the volcano) twists and does something different," said Jeff Wynn, chief scientist for volcano hazards at the observatory.

The plug, eh? Sounds like a champagne cork. So basically, this thing is going to shoot a red-hot rock 30 stories tall into the sky, and where it comes down, nobody knows.

Good luck, everybody.

Can't see it now. You could see it earlier tonight, but it's clouding up. Supposed to rain for two days, clear up again on Monday.

Thanks for the ping.

This wouldn't have happened if
they had voted for Dubya. ;o)

I've been watching her blow off
steam when the weather is clear.
If she blows up real good, I
hope we are in the middle of a
high pressure system. ;o)

Frankly, I had some doubts about this report. Almost every version of this report I found on Google was written by the same reporter but in the past hour it has appeared all over the world. Finding it hard to believe a lava dome thirty stories high is continuing to grow in the mountain.

In past two months even Drudge is reporting stories that do not appear to be credible or accurate: can anyone really believe over 150,000 Americans were making inquiries about moving to Canada one day after the election ???? !!!

Not me. I do not believe that assertion. Why report fake news? There is a guy who has a web site called "No More Fake News" but I find him hard to believe as well.

If you are upset by my simple post, read my tag line. I adopted it yesterday just for you.

Okay, an admittedly stupid question. If the Magma is growing at that rate and glows red at night... why is there snow on top of the plug? Wouldn't it all melt?

NASA (news - web sites) scientists took visible and infrared digital images of Mount St. Helen's on October 12, 2004 that show an increase in the number of hot spots in the crater and a plume smoke emitting from the crater. Bright red in the crater indicates hot spots; blue indicates snow and clouds. IMAGE MADE OCTOBER 12 REUTERS/NASA/HO

Thank You both for keeping St. Helens updated.

It was all that and a bag of chips in the news a month ago but now nothing on daily updates.

I think I can speak for others in thanking you both for the updates, history threads and pics.

I still chuckle at the lave lamp thread. Thanks djf it has been a stressful year and laughing hard feels good.

Thanks for the visual comparison.

I think we are going to have quite the eruption in the near future.

Funny how God designed evertything in nature with the same basic concept as the Birds and the Bees.

I hope when the show starts we have a clear day and photographers ready to capture it.

The local news has pretty much dropped it, and that is here in the PNW.

High school football updates are not lacking though. sigh.

Mt. Pelee, Martinique

In October of that year [1902 - After the cataclysmic eruption that killed 30,000 people], a lava dome began to rise out of the crater floor. It grew for a solid year into a gigantic shaft in the form of an obelisk. It has been described by many as the most spectacular lava dome produced in historic times. It was 350 to 500 feet thick at its base and it soared to over 1000 feet above the base of the crater floor. It sometimes rose at a remarkable rate, up to 50 ft/day. The huge spine of lava became known as the "Tower of Pelée." At night the sides of this magnificent monolith was marked by traces of red incandescent cracks from the still hot lava in its interior.

At its maximum size, the Tower of Pelée was twice the height of the Washington Monument and equal in volume to the Great Pyramid (Cheops) of Egypt. It finally became unstable and collapsed into a pile of rubble in March 1903, after 11 months of growth. No geologist had ever witnessed the emergence of such an object before.

The sunsets have been beautiful the last couple of evenings also on the coast as in your pic.

Nice capture.

I am butting in here but what does your tagline translate to.

Why so glum chum? PNW election results?

Keep your chin up.

I don't think the news is reporting things of interest but I would not go so far to say it is reporting disinformation.

And being a freeper since when do you go to MSM for updates and accurate reporting when it is all here with added opinions.(sarcasm, sorta).

"Feel sad? Too bad. Goodbye!"

I never go to MSM for anything but I check news sources daily. "Arafat dead; Arafat alive; Arafat in coma; Arafat not in coma; Arafat looking good;" Arafat = Confusion reigns. I do not watch television news reports and have not done so for many years. CBS = SeeBS. ABC = NBC = CNN = BS. Recently, I have been very disappointed in Drudge. He used to be more reliable. Now all his site reports is fluff, political rumors and nonsense and celebrity news. Like the National Enquirer. But he is making really big bucks. More power to him.

Mostly, I read books and watch movie videos and DVDs and play on the Internet.

I have pictures of the geologists trying to get rock samples from the "fin". Flying a chopper, suspending a bucket from a rope over 100 feet long. The chopper is barely visible next to the wall of the fin.

The fin is every much as big as they say it is. The pictures from Johnson Ridge are taken 15 miles away from the crater.

The size and scope of this thing is magnificent. When it blew in 1980, they equate it to a 30 megaton explosion.
