Specter faces battle for Judiciary chair

Washington, DC, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter is facing a possible battle for the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The newly re-elected Specter, who is in line for the post, angered social conservatives who long viewed the moderate, pro-choice lawmaker with suspicion with comments made at a Wednesday news conference that appeared to be a warning to President Bush against attempting to name an anti-abortion justice to the Supreme Court in his second term. He said in a statement Thursday "no litmus test" would be used in his oversight of Bush's nominees for the federal bench, but the comment has done little to quell the controversy among Republicans. Senate GOP leaders and members of the Judiciary have faced a reported barrage of calls from conservatives since the original statement and, according to aides, concerns have been raised within the GOP conference that Specter may not be the best choice for the job given his inclinations on such issues and the importance moral issues played in Tuesday's election.

The only way that Specter doesn't become Chairman is if someone on the Committee Challenges him. Hatch has served 8-years and must give up the Chair. Grassley is next in line, but since he is Chairman of the Finance committee, can't serve. Sen. Kyl is next in line after Specter, and would be a great be a great choice. Contacting other Senators is good, but what we really need to do is convince one of the other members, such as Senator Kyl to challenge Specter.

We must contact the conservative media in addition to contacting the politicians. They both feed off of the other.

Keep up the pressure...we will hit critical mass if we keep pushing.

Already contacted my Senator's office (staffer said been receiving a ton of calls). Plan on calling Judiciary members next week. When is the selections made? I heard sometime next week.

Need to keep pushing this. Glad to see National Review pushing this hard. Hope American Spectator and Weekly Standard writers do as well. Of course, us Freepers are all over it.

I'm glad somebody in the media has figured it out. Now I want to see if the GOP will figure it out. We spent too much time and money and emotion on this election to have a half-dead Rockefeller Republican trash it for us.

Call or fax Bill Frist's office and express your disatisfaction with Spector. That will do the most good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that Specter was one of the RINOs that voted against Clinton's impeachment. That's my litmus test.
