A decade ago, when Daniele Piomelli went to scientific conferences, he was often the only researcher studying cannabinoids, the class of chemicals that give marijuana users a high. His work often drew sniggers and jokes; but not any more. At the recent annual Society for Neuroscience conference in San Diego last week, scientists delivered almost 200 papers on the subject.
Why all the attention? Many scientists believe marijuana-like drugs might be able to treat a wide range of diseases, far beyond the nausea and chronic pain typically treated with medical marijuana.
Researchers presented tantalising evidence that cannabinoid drugs can help treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - known as ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease - Parkinsons disease and obesity. Other researchers are studying whether the compounds can help victims of stroke and multiple sclerosis.
Although the chemicals work on the same area of the nervous system, the new drugs are much more refined and targeted than marijuana, with few of its side effects.
"Cannabinoids have a lot of pharmaceutical potential," says Piomelli, a neuroscientist at the University of California. "A lot of people are very excited."
I am soooooooooo smart.
That you are! Nothing gets past you! :)
You made it too easy.
your right, but I was a young wild thang...Had alot of fun and I was lucky nothing ever bad happened, I knew all the back roads to get home plus I knew most of the cops in my area in fact I married one for awhile..
It is the Friday after the election, I have eased up a bit. ;P LOL
Guns, God, Country, Booze, Marijuana and Women....the simple pleasures in life, in no particular order.
It impairs learning, motivation, and productivity.
Our culture doesn't need another mechanism to convey to our youth that drugs are an acceptable form of recreation.
There is no upside.
And don't whine to me about law enforcement and prisons.
Rather, look at Holland, Norway, & Sweeden and tell me how many of their social problems you would like to import.
OBTW
My brother died from ALS last December, so don't bother going down that road either.
I am glad to see the "important" stuff being discussed again.
I guess you can't make up your mind which direction your going to up down sideways confusing huh?
Nothing is too confusing for this FReeper. :)
Your a no non-sense kinda guy I take...
Pretty much. In the trenches, I'm a take no prisoner, straightshootin' kinda guy. :)
Your to new to be talking this way my friend...
I'd like to import some of their troubled blondes, 5'7", 125 lbs., they can keep their socialism. We're growing our own. Pretty soon most of America will readily accept the notion that "if it's for the common good" we should adopt it. Prohibition is no exception. Possibly their single greatest tool for turning citizens into subjects.

In my opinion, that was worth the double post!
You're exactly right - "citizens into subjects".
That nails it.
You know...I've read what you wrote 7 times, and I still don't know what you said.
The original post was something about the only side effect of marijuana use he was familiar with was getting the munchies. I wise cracked (apparently none too well) that another side effect of people using mj is that it thoroughly irritates certain others, namely those with a desperate need to control others. You know, side effect, as in a secondary result not expected or intended by the primary action.
