VANITY: Why do FR Polls show up w/Firefox and not IE?
11/5/2004 | Self

Sorry in advance, because I know vanities can be out of control here. But I am going absolutely crazy trying to figure this out and compare settings between my 2 browsers.

When I open Internet Explorer and go to Free Republic, I get no forum polls over on the right, just the breaking news sidebar (which is exactly how I want it). When I open Firefox and go to the same exact link, I get the latest poll on the sidebar, which obscures the breaking news from being on the top.

Ready to be called an imbecile here-- what am I doing wrong? (Yes, I'm logged on, just to get that one out of the way...)

Too many vanities cause the polls to float to the top.

Polls show up on my work and home computer. At work they're on top of breaking news. At home, they're below. Drives me nuts.

You are doing nothing wrong. The more you play with browsers, the more you see glitches - things that work in one but not the other. I've got some HTML spec somewhere that documents some of what works in IE versus Netscape.

Funny; the poll shows up at the top in my IE sidebar (opposite of what you described).

Try voting, and see if it goes away.

as far as the FR server is concerned "you" on IE is NOT the same person as "you" when you use firefox - especially if you were not Logged On under one or the other.

you must be Logged-In on both browsers.

Damn! That sounded confusing!

Firefox will take anything.

Yeah, I'd already voted, so it wasn't that. And to confirm, I am logged in under both IE and Firefox, so it's not that either.

Remember that it's not really YOU that is "logged in" to FR. It's not even your computer that is logged in.

It is your browser.

Some polls might be available to logged-in members only.

Log in on both browsers.

Just a hunch, it might have something to do with being logged in and how the different browsers deal with cookies.

I'm pretty sure both browsers have me logged in. I am replying to you right now from my IE session as NYS_Eric. A couple of posts back, you'll see I also replied as NYS_Eric. That was from my Firefox session.

For whatever reason, the polls show up at the BOTTOM of the sidebar in IE and at the TOP in Firefox. I tried to "Configure Sidebar", but there is no choice for polls when you click on that.

You have a separate set of cookies for each browser.

IE probably thinks you've already voted.

Firefox doesn't probably doesn't think you've already voted in the IE browser.

I just tried it in FireFox and the poll is at the bottom of the "My Comments" screen.
Same as in Safari.

I just blew away all cookies in both Firefox and IE. Had to log back into both afterwards. Nothing has changed. (And in both browsers, it seems to know I've already voted, as my only 2 choices are "Details" and "Polls" in the poll sidebar box.)

Thanks for everyone's ideas so far.
