If pop culture is a reflection of a nation's values, then the signs of a Bush victory were there a long time ago for anyone to see.
There've been two runaway box-office surprises this year: Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" and Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."
The Bush political team intuitively understood the tone of the U.S. voters much better than the media did. To be honest, I still don't quite understand how certified media junkies like me could have been so wrong.
I read the New York Times (NYT: news, chart, profile) and the New Yorker religiously. I watch CNN (TWX: news, chart, profile) and the networks' evening news programs as well as the gabfests on Sunday mornings, too.
Go figure.

They are a fiction of the people who have appointed themselves the cultural elite.
Try reading the trash these people think is good literature, or watching any of the films or programs they think are sophisticated. Like their news shows, it's all just a repetition of tiresome cliches, hateful slogans, or juvenile vulgarity. I'm sick of hearing these people are the cultural elite: they're just a bunch of flotsam that's washed up on the docks of Manhattan or Malibu and hasn't yet been washed away.
And they wonder why they're in last place. They're not just "voters". They're "news consumers" and they aren't consuming yours. HELLO! It's important for ANY BUSINESS to know all about WHO IS BUYING THEIR PRODUCT (or not buying it as the case may be).
Unfortunately for them, (and fortunately for us), most of the 'cultural elite' in the world think all Americans are in complete agreement with the garbage spewed by the old media.
The coastal elite all voted against bush, not for Kerry.

Judging by the whole article, I have to disagree. I don't think the writer really has the capacity for satire or irony. It's just a regurgitation of her prejudices. Later, she even asks how her anointed media outlets could possibly have "missed this big story" and let her down so badly.
I believe you are correct. I think it will pass most New Yorker over, however. She needs to be a little less subtle. If she had referenced the blogosphere and Free Republic as another view, her sarcasm would have been clear.
Fahrenheit 911 made $113 million in the US and $99 million overseas.
Passion of the Christ made $ 370 million in the US and $ 239 million overseas.

He was using sarcasm, right? C'mon, that had to be a joke, he couldn't have actually believed this.
There's still hope. Bush did 8 points better in urban areas than he did in 2000. In fact, he did better in 49 states (Vermont was the exception) and with almost every demographic group.
The author mentions Wal-Mart republicans. When Wal-Mart ran out of rural areas, they started creeping into the cities.
What they really can't beleive is that the majority of people do not agree with them!
There's a chance he is being ironic? Here's to hoping...but it's a rare liberal who has that much sense of humor.
Here, allow me to fix this. It should read:

We have tuned out the MSM. Oh we may watch Dan Ratherbiased, Tom Brokjaw, Petah, and Sam Donaldson to see them spew and spin but we already know that we are hearing from Zogyists and being snowed.
To put it bluntly, the left believed their own B******T. When you cook the books on poll figures and ratings/circulation, be sure to keep a "real" copy in reserve to know how far you are off.
