Talks with Don & Roma getting down to business
Chicago Sun Times ^ | 10/14/04 | Robert Feeder

Now that Disney/ABC Radio has appointed a new boss for news/talk WLS-AM (890), the fate of morning stars Don Wade and Roma finally may be resolved at last.

But in taking so long to get down to business, ABC unwittingly allowed a door to open for the Wades at another Chicago station.

Four months after Zemira Jones left as president and general manager for a top operations post at Radio One, ABC this week named John Gallagher, a 19-year ABC veteran, as his successor. Gallagher, who most recently was director of sales at WJR-AM in Detroit, also will head Radio Disney's WRDZ-AM (1300).

Gallagher inherits a station that has been without its morning-drive franchise since Sept. 14, when the Wades' last contract extension expired.

Long-stalled negotiations with WLS are getting under way in earnest just as a new suitor has entered the picture.

Salem Communications, which is about to acquire WIND-AM (560) in a swap with Univision Radio and transform the Spanish-language station into a general market news/talk outlet, is believed to be a serious alternative for the Wades.

Although Salem's official plan for WIND is to air Bill Bennett's syndicated morning show, luring the Wades from WLS would be a major coup.

Fueling the speculation is the fact that Salem's director of network programming is Tom Tradup, the former president and general manager of WLS who retained the Wades when the station turned to news/talk.

While most observers expect WLS to come to terms with the Wades eventually, the sudden emergence of another player provides a distinct advantage to the husband-and-wife team.

She is consistently kind and respectful to all callers.

She used to be a namecalling screecher. As shrill as Hillary.

It didn't sell, they lost ratings, she changed. It's all show biz. They both are phonies.

jim johnson is clever and quick witted.

By far the best thing on WLS. The guy is a stitch.

You're right about the not telling anyone they were married... it's no act... I think Roma speaks with conviction. I think she voted Gore in 2000 and maybe even Kerry this time....

I think she is very sincere, and they have good chemistry...

You could not team Teri with a liberal.... for example Jay Marvin...(a true professional radio host i might add) they'd kill each other...

Well, we disagree. I think they are both moderates. He is a tad further right than her, but it's no big deal. I think it's all show biz. But that's just me. I really got tired of them.

They thanked Donald Roma for the opportunity to hold down the fort. Teri said she had no illusions that she was a suitable replacement for the Wades and encouraged everyone to listen in and welcome Don and Roma back. Said she and Art were, "Better than dead air..." Great humility - I think they did great. At first I thought it wouldn't work right because they were both conservatives. But then figured Air America doesn't care to present a balanced view, so who cares.

RE: She used to be a namecalling screecher. As shrill as Hillary.

Really...a namecalling screecher? How long ago was that? I've been in the Chicagoland area for 12 years now, and don't recall her being THAT bad. I do, however, recall her being annoyingly more liberal than she appears nowadays. And there were times i thought she didn't have a brain...but like i said, i think she's come around. Funny tho, my daughter (now in college) used to think she was a total ditz...yet, very nice.

So did I. The first I heard of the return was this thread a few minutes ago.

I stopped listening a long time ago.

Me too. In my opinion, Don took the wrong side in the Elian affair and I don't forget things like that. I even sent his 'Whitewater Celebration Committee' button back to him over that!

Really...a namecalling screecher?

Not that long ago, a few years ago, she would attack anyone who disagreed with her by asking them personal questions about what they did for a living etc. in order to show some self serving bias for their opinions.

If a caller didn't like welfare, she would ask them how much money they had, or what kind of car they drove, stuff like that.

"I love Terry O'Brien though so I'll miss her in the morning."

Maybe she should explore that morning slot at WIND AM560.

Her talents are wasted at WLS (Sunday only).

Don and Roma are just phony showbiz radio acts. Art and Terri are the real deal. Wouldn't surprise me if Art and Terri get lured over to the new station.

I'd love to see Garry Meier back with Roe, too. They often got pretty juvenile...but they always made me laugh. Roe and Garry had a chemistry that i don't get from Roe and Jim. IMO, Roe and Jim are "ok"...but Roe and Garry were a party everyday. I miss that.

I agree. And witty, cynical, and straightforward. Kind of Ann Coulter-ish.

Her intial pairing with Jake Hartford was a disaster (too bad), and Art is wrong, somehow.

Roe & Gary were awesome. After living in several places around the country and listening to various talk programs, they were the best duo, by far. Since gary left, I do not listen to WLS anymore. I went out and bought XM radio two weeks after they forced him out. But, if Gary did come back I would be listening to 50,000 watt monkey, once again, at 2 PM everyday.
