DES MOINES, Iowa - President Bush (news - web sites) won Iowa on Friday, claiming the last three states of the 2004 presidential election.
Although Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) had already conceded the race for the White House on Wednesday, the counting of absentee ballots continued in Iowa, which had been too close to call.
By Friday, Bush had 745,980 votes and Kerry had 732,764 with the number of outstanding ballots too few to change the outcome.
Long after the polls closed on Tuesday, Bush won Ohio, which gave him the 270 electoral votes necessary for a second term, and New Mexico.
With Iowa decided, Bush had 286 electoral votes and Kerry 252.
In 2000, Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) won Iowa and New Mexico, which went for Bush this year. The only Democratic switch was New Hampshire, which went for Bush in 2000.
Iowa will not certify the results until Nov. 29.
Kerry began campaigning in Iowa nearly three years ago. His surprising win in the Jan. 19 caucuses over a slate of eight other candidates gave him the momentum to claim the Democratic nomination.
OK, Yahoo News shows 286 EVs. Let's keep track of how long it takes the MSM newspapers and networks to catch up.

Yeah, and the fun part is the campaign for 2008 will be getting geared up in a few days . . . ughhh.
Our dem sec'y of state was a tool of the Kerry campaign. They were convinced that giving everyone the opportunity to vote absentee would guarantee a Kerry victory. So the State spent thousands running an absentee ballot program.
The beautiful part of this election is, the RATS pulled out every stop and still got beat. That has to be very demoralizing.
I'm in a blue state :( but working to change it! That map is a beauty! (And the county one even prettier!)
Don't forget 2006. I predict the Pubbies will net an additional 1-2 seats!
If Kerry/Edwards signs are bringing anywhere close to $0.25/ton, the DM sanitation department may see a couple of new millionaires.
at some point, that pic has to be my background...
Jesus is in Canada too! His church does not stop at some border.
And 40% of Canadians are conservatives the same number as in the US - go figure.
I agree. We 'fix' florida's voting problems, and dis-enfranchised voters turns into a big W for W...
Bush won but by slim enough margin for the dims to suddenly 'find' a box of ballots with enough to put Gore over the top by a few votes. It was fraud pure and simple.
this time, tho; they sure tried, they couldn't put in enough fraud votes to overcome Bush's lead...without being caught.
I think we had troops on the ground in N.M. and several other states that had the goods on the "found" ballots caper and stopped them in their tracks...no backing down this time -
LOL
Great map. I think you can safely put Alberta into the green, maybe the other plains provinces, too.
WELCOME HOME
"FILO" also comes to mind (except I think DC held some kind of meaningless convention before IA, right?)
I wonder, now that the election is over is it OK to talk about the SamBurglar now?
WELCOME HOME
Thanks for that post! I hadn't seen anyone else make your observation about the absurd graphic.
The only sign I did not see trashed was the orange one that my neighbor had planted that said something to the effect of "The Republicans stole my Kerry sign just like they stole the 2000 elections". I figured she is still in the basement with the blinds drawn suffering from an "undisclosed malady".
