Republicans lose seats in Hawaii State House
Honolulu Star Bulletin ^ | 11/4/04 | Richard Borreca

Gov. Linda Lingle wanted to win three more Republican seats in the state House. Instead, she lost six incumbents and with it her claims of having a political mandate, Democrats say.

In four years the GOP presence in the House has been reduced to 10 members from 19.

Sad to say, but Cheney's visit on Sunday energized Democratic voters to come out, and being a strong Democratic state, the local Republicans have to pay the price.

Not weird... In 1990, Pat Saiki was leading her the race for the US Senate. Bush 41 visited the state, and she promptly tanked hard.

Hawaii would have been the perfect state for someone like Ahnold to have campaigned in.

To think about it, I'd say yes. The state party has tried hard not to be seen as the party of Bush. By doing this, they were successful in electing Lingle to be governor. The strategy was to build the state party first, after being thrown out from the government for 4 decades. Unfortunately, event happens. The local polls showed Bush led Kerry by 1% in mid Oct. Suddenly, there's a talk to bring one of the national ticket here. The state party took a very risky action by accepting to have Cheney here.

I think after electing Lingle, they became over-confident.

This ranks amongst the worst of our losses, along with Colorado, where we lost the majority control of the entire legislature (and I think wiped out Gov. Bill Owens's shot at the WH for good in '08). If we hadn't knocked off 1 legislative Hawaiian House incumbent to offset losing 6 members, we'd have been down to 9 out of 40. This may not bode well for Lingle's reelection chances, either, let alone her ability to accomplish legislative goals.

I misspoke on that, there are 51 members of the HI House in total, not 40.

Hate to admit it but Ahnold probably would have energized the vote for Bush.

We had good weather on Tuesday too, so all the pro-Dem old folks were easily able to go to the polls for a bit of election year excitement.

Stupid Minnesota lost 12 seats to the dims partly because they aimed the gun at their own foot.

AHAHAHAH ... Keyes is an idiot, who is now ranting against his own party! We don't need such barking Republicans! Anyway we are comparatively better in HI that are the Demons in Florida (read another post about Florida House and Senate). I'm wondering how many overseas votes came to Bush in HI... boh. I thought these could make the difference. Bye

Hawaii 2000
..Bush 137,845
..Gore 205,286
..Nader 21,623
Hawaii 2004
..Bush 194,184
..Kerry 231,691
Bush increased his number of votes in Hawaii by 40.9%
JFK increased on the (Gore+Nader) votes by 2.1%
It was a longshot but the GOP got a lot more votes this time.

The difference between the Bush increase and the Kerry increase in Hawaii was the greatest of any of the 50 states 38.8%

It could be worse. Linda Lingle's popular but her party isn't. In the islands, the Democratic machine is too much entrenched to dislodge completely after forty-five years.

I concur. Hawaii is very immersed in the Democratic Party with its entitlement policies and "anti-American" sentiment. I say "anti-American" in the same way that minorities some times rich, white, WASP America (as if that actually exists).

The image that minorities and liberals have of Republicans is rich, white, mean WASPs who are greedy and rednecks. Liberal view themselves as open-minded and interested in helping minorities. It will take a while to overcome this ridiculous stereotype.

More like slick willie's minions were busy manufacturing votes while everyone else was focused on the presidential campaign.

This puts it into perspective. The GOP just has to work harder in Hawaii. Anybody out there who knows how to get further momentum going?
