GOP victories have potential to marginalize Republican moderates (Sen Chafee may switch to Dems)

"Regrettably, we have seen an erosion in the Senate of centrists on both sides of the aisle," said Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, a Republican moderate whose leverage may drop substantially in the next Congress. She said she hoped Bush will push for cooperation between the two parties.

Another GOP moderate, Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R.I.), expressed even deeper disappointment, telling the Providence Journal he would not rule out switching to the Democratic Party.

He should go, he votes with them. He should not benefit from the hard earned success of this party.

Chafee, dude, the Dims don't want you. (Been there. Done that.) They want McCain.

No more extortion. Amen to that!

Include specter in that group. Have done with the lot of them. The senate gets nothing done with a majority, the pubs are toothless.

dropping Chafee would be great..

something of a challenge to remove him via elections in wacky Rhode Island..

we do have a very popular republican mayor who could make a good run of it.

Oly who along with hilteray married governors of small unimportant states.

Of course that was her last major achievement.

Now suzie red dress has had more of an impact actually got legislation passed.

BTW OLY joined Lurch with the fishing rules he sponsored.

Apologizes to my Friends from Maine.

Why the hell are these people Republicans anyway? If they want to be "moderate" they can easily become Democrats. You don't see any pro-life or pro-2nd Amendment Democrats.

I wouldn't worry about Chafee. This is a combination of posturing for spoils and playing to his lib constituency.

Switching to the permanent minority party would be sheer idiocy.

He has less incentive to jump now. If he was going to jump, he could have done it during the current congress and created a 50-50 split like that creep Jeffords did in the prior congress, costing the GOP control of the committees. If Chafee jumps now, it'll mean nothing other than the symbolic effect.

But by threatening to jump, he can likely get some concessions from the GOP leadership (such as pork for his state, favorable committee assignments, etc.).

Let me get this straight. Chaffee and Snowne are upset that the GOP picked up Senate seats?

Like I said, the GOP Senate is no longer in a hostage situation. Snowe and Chafee could blackmail them by threatening to jump ship.

Now the GOP attitude can be: go ahead and jump

Ben Nelson is up in 2006 I believe. He could go a long way to returning if he co-sponsered social security reform and tax reform out of the box.

Well, they aren't so much concerned with the party labels, but they clearly prefer advancing the liberal agenda.

This is rich.
Conservativism won resoundingly across this land.
In how many ways will we here that we are stupid podunk fascists. That the libs could not get there rational message out. That the RINO N'Eastern repubs are mainstream...

Please libs, get your message out. Louder, more clearly. Sing it from the rooftops. Full page ads. Protests.

I absolutetly love the fact that they do not and will not "get it".

Not well.

http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/002640.php

As soon as Jeffords went independent, Democrats such as Kerry tried to keep the program afloat, but the program expired without the broader support Jeffords could extort from the GOP.

I can't believe to this day, the difference between John and Lincon Chafee. I live in RI, and his way of thinking is pathetic. He is a so off the mark in many things, it makes me sick. My sister shops at the same market as the Chafees, and she was so disgusted, that he spent so much time trying to pick a tomato. No kidding. He never did pick one. He told a reporter he "he was scared", regarding the war in Iraq. He is quite meely about so many issues. I would vote him out in the next election, but I am afraid it would upset the majority in the senate. Fortunately, I am planning to move out of this democratic state by the next election. I am hoping another Republican will beat the hell out of him, as are so many of us. He is a wimpy, unintelligent moron. His father must be appalled.

Does it make ANY sense to switch to the minority party??

When is he up for re-election? One lesson of Tuesday was that the entire Northeast is solidly Democratic.
