Someone asked earlier tonight who we should consider for office in 2008. I know this might sound crazy and I don't know too much about him other than the more recent epic movies he has made, like the "Passion" but what about MEL GIBSON? Unless I heard wrong I believe he was born as an American citizen. Just a thought. What say you?
The most conservative women I can think of are Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham but they are not politicians and I could never see either of them moving to the center just to run for an office.
But I think he could carry other states in the northeast like PA, ME, NH, and CT.
Definitely. It's early. We can allow ourselves to think big.
The candidate reiterated his support for an assault weapons ban contained in Congress' crime bill, and the Brady law which imposes a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases. `I don't think (the waiting period) will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect,' Romney said. Source
Damned!
Yup. Romney's liberal streaks plus the undercurrent of anti-Mormon prejudice in this country (which the Dems would ruthlessly exploit in any number of directions) make him a non-starter. A true disaster. Too bad. He seems to have a lot of good points.
Couple of names I forgot about, just to be more through:
Tom Ridge - I think this guy is to wooden, and lacks carisma...however being close to Bush and ambitious means he's got to be on the list. I think he barely gets off the starting line but you never know.
Tommy Franks - could be THE wild card. Seems to have some Eisenhower-esque properties, and Generals are about the only ones who can get away with starting at the top.
I need one more for an even 20.....
Also, 2008 is too early but keep an eye on Bobby Jindal.
My money is on Sen. Allen.
I agree with you above points. Plus...
He has been a Governor of a large, southern state.
He is a conservative that plays well to the media.
He has a commanding physical presence.
He has his dad's classic NFL football linage to draw people in to listen to his story.
He seems genuinely humble and strong simultaneously, Who's that remind you of these days?
By far the best in the field of possible GOP candidates for 2008 is South Carolina governor Mark Sanford:

The only wild card with Sanford is foreign policy. As is the case with most governors, we don't know really how he'd do or where he stands. However, he did serve in the US House in the mid 90s so we could look back at his votes. Plus, nothing I've seen in his profile would suggest he's a terrorist appeaser!
Or, he could do as Bush did and hire a good VP and Cabinet to help with that...
My second choice would be MN governor Tim Pawlenty.
I would doubt it. Wouldn't play too well in our vast rural regions. Must protect ourselves from all sorts of wildlife. I just think he's weak on everything else.
Not only a 3rd Bush.... in 2016, George P. Bush would be ready to run. Yikes. Dynasty.
I'd add Mike Huckabee (AR) to the list.
1. Current Governor of AR
2. Definitely a social conservative, fiscal conservatism could be a problem but AR does not have a large tax base so he has limits here. But he is trying to turn AR into a major supplier of the auto plants in other southern states so hopefully in the long run a successor won't be faced with the problems he has.
3. If you mean by "dirty laundry" moral scandals (I think you may mean this as you referenced Owens) no known problems here. His problem may be in releasing some felons early that have come back to haunt him (the revenge of Willie Horton).
4. Recently featured on 700 Club this past week. I think he comes across quite well. He also has backlogs of radio clips on the AR Governor's website and he sounds good. Also after losing 110 pounds he looks much better.
I do humbly believe that WY's three key electoral votes are safe with the GOP for decades to come. Unless, of course, the Libertarians ever do become a threat to anyone.
Ann Richards got elected and she ain't the best friend of the 2nd ever.
I would like to put up the Gov. of MD for consideration. He's moderate but better than some. If we have to go with a moderate I'll take him. If not him, then our Lt. Gov. would be a good consideration for VP.
I'm not sure Huckabee has the presence, but I like what I hear about him. Another guy I've since added to the list of possibles is Barbour of MS -- right now he may actually be my #1 guy.
Of all the "high-profile" guys that are noised about, I actually like Jeb the best. I'm just not sure we could get him elected...
I don't think people will go for Jeb in 08. jmho..
McCain won't get my vote...............no way. I'm tired of his pandering to both sides.......
