France has hailed the US election as an important moment in world diplomacy calling it an opportunity to revive the transatlantic relationship - no matter who wins.
Michel Barnier, the French foreign minister, declined to comment on the latest projections showing President George W Bush edging close to victory over Senator John Kerry.
Relations between Paris and Washington have been strained since President Jacques Chirac opposed America's war in Iraq.
But M Barnier told RTL radio: "I can... tip my hat to American democracy .
"A new stage is starting. It is a very important moment for the world."
He said France will work with the new American administration.
"We have many things to do, both on the current crises - in Iraq, the Middle East, Iran, the fate of the African continent - and to renovate the transatlantic relationship," he said.
Last week he said he hoped for a new alliance with the United States.
But Mr Barnier repeated calls for a multipolar world in which the United States did not try to dominate world diplomacy alone.
"America and Europe need each other," he said. "We must try to re-establish American confidence in the European project because the Americans cannot imagine building, directing and driving the world alone.
"Our world needs several powers," Mr Barnier said. "This is how I understand the multipolar world."
Asked about difficulties in relations between Mr Bush and M Chirac, M Barnier said: "They are two seasoned and experienced politicians who manage to talk frankly.
"I say again, we have much to do and much to do together, with the American administration and the European Union."
Hopefully bush will bury the hatchet, in chirat!
We need to bury the hatchet in Chiracs head!
Jack can pound sand.
Hey Froggy. JESUS LOVES YOU It's everybody else that thinks you're an ass.
Au Revoir, FRENCHIE.
Chirac can kiss my American @ss!!! I am still banning all French products from my home and I always will!
Don't care, I will continue to boycott all things french until my President is vindicated.
Keep hoping Frenchie!
Sending the Foreign Legion to Iraq to help in Falluja might help but it would have to be at least 10,000 troops.
That will not happen.
Should read:
chirac ready to bury hatchet IN Bush's back
*****
I sent an email to the frog ambassador and told him the US would be continuing it's boycott of frog products.
LOL.....I guess we're not the 'compassionate conservatives' I hear about.
France has no choice. The American people have demonstrated that they know what they want. Period.
Chirac knows that American money will continue to flow out of his country like water through a leaky hose.
Not that the President needs my advice, but when the French want to bury the hatchet, watch your back.
OK guys, we're beginning to sound like DUmmies. Let's blow it off today and go back to more civilized vocab tomorrow.
FRANCESTILLSUCKSHARD
Chiraq is in charge of his troops, and he knows where Iraq is. Why do socialists have to make things so hard?
What USA demands: Front page of LeMonde, picture showing French soldiers din the sands of Iraq with our Liberator.
Proof they bought into the lie that Bush was a selected president the first time.
GWB had better watch his back, then, because that's probably where Chirac wants to bury it.
