Russia to Instill Youth With Patriotism Through War, Video Games
02.11.2004
MosNews
The Russian government plans to revive a Soviet-era program aimed at instilling a sense of patriotism in the countrys youth through an ongoing series of sports events, rallies, clubs, military training games, and even patriotic video games in hopes to replace the popular DOOM.
The developers of the $23 million program which will be called Ready for Work and Defense of the Motherland have joined forces with the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education, and asked the Ministry of Finance to set aside nearly a ruble per person in financing, the Gazeta daily reports.
That would nearly quadruple the funds that the Finance Ministry set aside for such programs in the past.
While the organizers do not expect to make young people patriots overnight, they do hope that the Finance Ministry will approve the bulk of the program and give it most of the financing that was requested.
In the past, Russian Pioneers the Soviet equivalent of Girl and Boy Scouts were encouraged, and often forced, to help out in the community without any form of pay.
Starting in 2006, if the Finance Ministry pays the bill for the program, such efforts will be institutionalized and young people may even wear badges identifying them as good-deed doers.

Well.... as long as it is not Communist "patriotism" (what an oxymoron!).
Cartman: "Kenny, where's your Nintendo?" Kenny's Dad: "We don't have a Nintendo. We have a Colecovision hooked up to the Black and White." Cartman: "Jeez, this is like a third world country!"
Youth to flee Russia as soon as they can get a visa to the US.
lol!!!
They just aren't as sophisticated at it as we are.
I still like playing the original DOOM every now and then. Loved how those demons screamed when they bought it.
Ah yes, thanks to Bill and Hill! and Janet Reno
little Elian now wears the proud red scarf of
a Young Pioneer.....
oh, and they aren't quite like the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, but the author knew this and didn't want to
tell you.
Say, this sounds like the Kerry Plan, aw, too bad we won't be seeing it forced upon our youth over here.
My son, who lives in Moscow, has organized many youth programs for Jewish children in the Former Soviet Union.
Christian churches should do the same and not leave it up to the government.
"Say, this sounds like the Kerry Plan, aw, too bad we won't be seeing it forced upon our youth over here."
We have a couple of our version, except our version is a little more benign, but nevertheless encourages our children and young adults to develop a soft distrust (even hatred) for the US. One program is implemented in our public Jr. and High Schools...it's called the Model UN. The other is for young adults who are fresh out of college...it's called the "Peace Corps." Russia's Young Pioneer-type program will be designed to do just the opposite. They will brainwash their youth to become uncritical supporters of Putin et al, and to hate any country or people Mother Russia deems as the enemy.
Could be -
And in a way - I wish we were educating our children about our history more - though I do believe the attack of 9/11 did more than any talk or program could achieve. I think some of the young showed that yesterday -
I say keep track of the moves - and study the reaction of the people - they do seem to be moving backward -
Grrrr - O'Reilly is full of it tonight - What mistakes did President Bush make - If you ask me - It was Rum. and his bunch - they didn't see ahead to the possibility of the Iraq force hiding amoung the people to fight another day - The military minds failed - President Bush didn't - O'Reilly is stupid for putting down the President as he is -
These times they are challenging enough - we don't need fools like O'Reilly adding to them - Those on the Left just never quit -
"(Jewish Synagogues)...and Christian churches should do the same and not leave it up to the government."
Amen!!!
"These times they are challenging enough - we don't need fools like O'Reilly adding to them - Those on the Left just never quit -"
It's very refreshing to see that people recognize that O'Reilly is a creature of the Left.
Whoa big spender. At 29 Rubles to the dollar, that would buy what? A stick of gum?
That equals 20-30 million dollars...and that's just for starters.
I knew you'd come in with something witty!
I am sure that Christian organizations, particularly the Orthodox church (I do not know how widespread Evangelicals or Catholics are among the Russian people) could achieve the same level of success.
bumparooskie for later
