Okay... I've been following this close WA governor race... Rossi had been ahead, albeit by just a few hundred votes, but all of a sudden, just in the past 30 minutes, Gregoire all of a sudden pulls ahead by 15,000.

Now, I know that they're still counting absentee ballots and may count provisionals, but this is the exact same scenario as in 2000 with the Cantwell/Gorton senate race, where Gorton eventually lost by just a few hundred votes.

This is one to keep an eye on... as a Washingtonian of almost 5 years now, it'd be delightful to have a (R) governor for a change!

There will be an automatic recount if the results are less than 1/2 of one percent apart.

Washington election law has a mandatory recount if the difference is less than 2,000 votes *and* less than 1/2 of 1% of the total votes cast.

A candidate can request a recount at their own expense as well.

Reminds me rather of Tim Johnson (D-SD)'s Senate victory in 2002 over Thune. Thune was up in the polls slightly with all or nearly all precincts counted ... and then suddenly thousands of Johnson votes magically appeared from reservations, with an even higher-than-last-time Democratic voting rate therein. Those ballots put Johnson over Thune.

There are about 135,000 absentee ballots from King County (the Soviet of Seattle) and those are being counted now. There are, apparently, about another 120,000 absentee ballots from other parts of the state. WA breaks politically, socially and to some degree economically on the Cascade Mountains which run N/S about 90 miles east of Seattle. Eastern WA goes heavy Rep. Western WA goes heavy Dem. The issue is where those other 120K ballots come from. Wish us luck.

By the way, 1/2 of 1% in this case comes out to about 9800-9900 votes, so it just has to be under 2,000 vote difference to trigger the auto-recount.

In CA, absentee votes tend to be more conservative, regardless of where they came from. What about WA?

WTH? NOOOOOOO! Thanks a lot Bennett.

We had better recount those ballots. I live in WA also and I am tired of the libs chasing business out of the state.

In retrospect, aren't you glad that Thune got the opportunity to run again this year!

No more Daschle for the Dems. It is almost as sweet as Bush winning.

If you go to the King County website it says it was last updated at a little after 4 PM, so that would be my guess.

Click for King County Election results

The Snohomish County election results site doesn't say when it was updated, but does say that interim results over the next few daya are to be available at 5 pm.

If McKenna has any degree of integrity, Gregoire won't be governor for long, even if she wins the election. I guess we migh find out just how honest mcKenna is, won't we?

Hey, ya all! We have a BIG senate race coming up in 2006, to try and get rid of Maria Cantwell. I'm wondering what the Washington FReeper consensus is for considering recruiting Alan Keyes to come out here and run as our Republican Candidate? Thoughts?

they say that in WA state, over 40 percent of the state votes absentee.

I am wondering if these have been counted yet.
I think last sveral elections, they took about five days or so to count all the absentees.

I think that may be the case now.
Don't want to give up hope until we KNOW that every military vote for the NW has been counted.

Good grief, are these results being transferred by carrier pidgeon? I've never seen states so slow in counting ballots. Has NM ever reported theirs today? Perhaps people from TX need to go over and help them count! Also haven't seen anything on Iowa 24 hrs. after election day. These places need to get a better system before '08!

Currently, Dino is ahead with several hundred votes. Have faith about Dino winning. Sam Reed was just on talk radio KVI 570 and explained that 900K ballots are yet to be counted and only 300K are from King County. Most of the remaining 600K ballots outside King county are expected to tip in favor of Dino.

Even a large number of the King county ballots are considered to be from rural parts...this is very encouraging. Given all that, Sam thinks Dino will win by a slim margin. Sounds like we will know by Friday! This should be an outcome worth the wait!

Please explain.

I'm not worried in the slightest about McKenna's integrity.

I'm not questioning his integrity, but he will have an opportunity to have it revealed once he is in office. If he is a man of integrity, Gregroire, Locke, the CJ of the state supreme court, and others will be going to prison.
