Must get Frist to deny Specter the Judiciary Committee Chair...

Posted on 11/03/2004 12:31:29 PM PST by texasaggie97

What can be done to get Specter off the Judiciary Committee? Can it be done, what are the rules? Anyone but Arlen...

Cornyn would be great....

Here's a good article on this....http://www.nationalreview.com/carney/carney200411031005.asp

Can we also get Richard Shelby out of the Banking Committee chair? He is doing just as much damage as Specter. How about putting Mel Martinez there?

I know Arlen is an irritation, but remember He is the man who got Clarence Thomas out of the judiciary committee, so that he could be confirmed.

It's absolutely critical that we minimize the power Specter has over nominating and confirming SCOTUS justices.

FWIW I speculated here that this is already a done deal. Arlen will NOT be the chair. It's the price that FRist and Santorum extractred for supporting Arlen during the primary, and having W hold a fund raiser for him. It makes ense on a practical level, as well..Arlen's health isn't tnat great..and a long series of contentious committee hearing and wild floor fights could kill him..

Why is Hatch leaving this spot?

Both he and Hatch need to be taken to a back room and verbally roughed up in the next few weeks. Bush needs to get real tough now.

I was actually thinking about that this morning. I believe it is possible, because isn't one of the reasons that Senator Nickles (sp?) from OK retired because he was denied a chairmanship that he was in line to get? In any case, in a fit of spite at being denied such a powerful chairmanship, Spector could very well do a Jeffords, if not in fact, in spirit. We still don't have enough committed votes in order to overcome judicial filibusters. If thwarted in his rise to the chairmanship, Spector could simply join the Dems in the filibusters until he was restored. A better way to manage it might be to find some type of consequence (publicly removing him from the chairmanship at that time or thwarting some other pet project that really matters to him)and making it clear that it will be used against him the first time he appears to apply his pro-abortion, pro-Dem litmus test to a nominee.

Well then, I originally didn't want him to chair the committee, but perhaps I should have thought it through. Are there any down-sides that you can think of?

Sure. But what has he done for us lately.

It's absolutely critical that we minimize the power Specter has over nominating and confirming SCOTUS justices.

The first thing a new Senate does is to vote on the Senate rules. The Republicans need to change the rules so that filibusters on judicial appointments are forbidden.

I hope all FReepers will contact their Senators to urge this action.

Agreed! Specter has to go!

I was actually hoping he'd lose last night to get him off that committee.

We here in PA tried to purge the party of him in the primary but our own party wanted to keep him. GW and Santorum campaigned for him and lots of kool-aid drinkers voted for him. And you think they will have the orbs to remove him from the Judiciary Committee ?

Memo to Frist:

No more niceties with the Democrats - You have a majority. Start acting like it. Go nuclear on judge confirmations.

He is past his sell-by date and has to give up that committee chair. Ditto with Senator Stevens on Approps. Senate rules.

I guess you could offer him the Appropriations Committee Chair in exchange for it...I doubt Stevens would give that up, though.

We tell Arlen what to do or he gets no support in six years and ends his career.
