Oakland has been trending Democrat due to demographic changes. There is a large Jewish community (normally Democrat)but a huge "Jews for George" organization so I hoped for a better showing. Macomb County was also not as strong for W as I expected from the '02 Governor's election percentages and from the preponderance of lawn signs.
The Local paper is deeply saddened. :)
Also a lot of blacks in Oakland. Majority in Southfield, Oak Park, Pontiac, and possibly Lathrup Village.
"And if California could sever all the counties touching the Bay, we could manage Los Angeles and it wouldn't affect our Electoral College votes."
And we could probably handle LA county, if citizenship and IDs were required to vote.
Related.
I list San Diego, Orange, Ventura and San Luis Obispo as four Republican counties on south and central coast. Sometimes, even Santa Barbara county goes rightward.
Sadly a bunch of limosine liberals in Oakland, plus you have cities like Pontiac, etc. Just makes me sick that we lost Michigan yesterday - wasn't expecting to win - but having worked the polls yesterday and having seen the turnout in West Michigan, which was staunchly pro-Bush, it's just so sad to see it all go for naught because of Detroit. Isn't it enough that they take all our tax money? Do they have to take our state's pride down the toilet with them too? Kwame Kilpatrick - what a joke.
You wrote: "The GOP writes off the black vote 3 1/2 of every four years, and then complains when they don't win Detroit and Philly. Whatever the vote fraud in those cities, the machines won't be broken while we give the Democrats 90% of the black vote."
Response: No, we do not write off the black vote at all.
The Democrats do that for 3 1/2 years, then send a bunch of corrupt preachers out there like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to stir up hatred and bigotry in the black community.
Every major city in America has a black inner city, where the schools are basket cases and have been so for three generations and counting. And in every case, Democrats have solidly controlled the school boards. They Democrats have done NOTHING for the education and improvement of these schools.
Conversely, it's the Republicans who are pressing forward on school vouchers. Vouchers will help no-one better than inner city blacks, by opening up to them the possibility of changing schools, going into private and parochial schools. Democrats, who wrecked the schools there in the first place, relentlessly oppose vouchers everywhere.
Fact is, the Republicans have been reaching out to black voter's interests on a core issue affecting their lives: education, for 10 years now, the Democrats have been systematically and viciously opposing every single effort at education reform or vouchers.
And yet the argument is made that it's the REPUBLICANS who ignore the interests of the black inner cities, and therefore the DEMOCRATS, who "care" deserve the votes? The Democrats have been screwing the blacks when it comes to education for 50 years. The only people offering the black inner city any sort of ladder of hope to get out of the mess are the Republicans. The Democrats are fighting them tooth and nail, ensuring that the black inner city dwellers remained screwed and in bad schools. And the blacks vote 89% for the Democrats anyway.
This is simply stupid, blind, tribal voting patterns, and it is the blacks screwing themselves. If they woke up in the cities and voted for the interests of their kids, the Republicans would win the vote of every black parent.
This year, President Bush made a real effort to reach out to the black voters and deliver that message. He asked for their votes. Result? Not one damned bit of difference. No change. This is not because the GOP writes off the black vote. It is because the blacks write themselves off by refusing to break the voting habit for the Democrats who have done nothing but screw them.
Yes, exactly. The GOP does not to a sufficient job of making our case to blacks. I can recite everything you've written to educated black liberals and they've never heard any of it. They're surprised to meet an unapologetic Republican, and I pull no punches with hucksters like Jackson and Sharpton. It actually gives me credibility with them. They're willing to listen, even if not necessarily to agree, because I don't act ashamed of being a conservative and I don't hide my contempt for the race politics of the left. Most GOP politicians do.
What county do the Arabs live in?
This should be shouted to the Mountain Tops.
Livingston County! I will be back....
They mostly live in Dearborn, which is Wayne county. There's probably some scattered throughout other suburbs- I'm told there's some in Macomb county.
Looking ahead two years, I got a hunch that the GOP is going to be eying Debbie Stabaneur's U.S. Senate seat.
I see why all of these went the way they did, mostly Black or university counties. But what's with Muskegon?
I think Kal-i-forn-ia needs to be spit into 2.
Muskegon County has a large black population and is a union town. Ford has a plant there.
R U nutz?
That'll give 'em 2 senators.
No way, my girlfriend is from Windsor. As soon as she gets through the tunnel she says: We're in the States lock the door.
If I ever showed her the lower Eastside where I grew up she would freak!
Make it a high-security prison a la Escape From New York.
