SPANISH police have smashed a plot to bomb Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium. Islamic extremists arrested last week in Spain were eyeing up the football ground where David Beckham and Zinadine Zidane play every week.
The first phase of Operation Nova led to the arrest of a gang of suicide bombers who were planning to blow up the Spanish parliament.
And fanatics rounded up across the country in a second wave of terror arrests had put Santiago Bernabeu on a hit-list of high-profile targets.
Respected judge Baltasar Garzon - the man who tried to extradite Augusto Pinochet from Britain - made the terrifying revelation yesterday after hearing evidence from the suspects.
Two railway stations in Madrid and the city's 5160ft Picasso Tower were also on the terrorists' hit-list.
A police source said: 'Thousands of people pack Real Madrid's ground every other weekend. It would have been a massacre.'
Thirteen people were held around Spain last week as part of Operation Nova.
They and the suicide bombers arrested in the frst phase are thought to be linked to the March 11 train bombers who were planning to target English language lessons next door to Brooklyn Beckham's school.
The extremists arrested last week are suspected members of radical Moslem group called the Martyrs of Morocco, formed largely from the fast-growing north African population of Spain's prisons.
