According to several reputable sources, the Allegheny County GOP HQ in Pittsburgh just had lost power. Because the office building at 125 Seventh Street is without power, telephones, computers, and other office machines are unusable, a huge blow to Bush supporters hoping to remain competitive tonight in this key area of the country.

While it is still not clear the cause of this electrical problem, politics could potentially be a factor.

The Democrat Headquarters across the street and other surrounding buildings are said to be with power...

They need the guy from "A Christmas Story" to come down and replace the fuses. He's the fastest fuse guy on the planet.

Simple, It is unlikely to be from the main line to the building, because someone would see downed lines or someone doing it. If you said that the locals around them have power, then it has to be the main breaker of the building, or turn off some equipment in the room if on one fuse, you're overloading the circuit.

Could they rent a generator temporarily while they work on getting line power restored ?

Also, many types of phones have a power plug that normally connects to a "wall wart" power module...these could be adapted to a battery pack with an appropriate power plug .

If there are FReepers in the area that are Amateur Radio operators try to contact them. Many times they will have emergency batteries, power adaptors etc. , ready to go and they may be able to get some of the phones and computers going quickly. I would be happy to help if I lived in that state.

Head to Home Depot, but a couple of small generators (computers don't draw that much power...it's not like a stove/range)--why fool with an electrician, when you can make a generator roar and belch fumes (across the street to the DNC)--

…the Allegheny County GOP HQ in Pittsburgh just had lost power.

I don’t know anything about your building but it wasn’t uncommon in the past for office buildings to have the utilities come into the basement (or utility room or whatever).

A lot of times each individual office space or suite would have its own meters for electricity, water, gas.

I’d send someone down to check if there’s a meter missing. It should be pretty obvious if one is. If it is, you’re pretty much screwed for today, IMO. Everywhere I’ve ever been the city electrical inspector has to sign off on it before the utility company will stab a new one in. (Though you might get them to speed things up if it was done today for malicious reasons.)

They need to determine if just their building is impacted. It could very well be a "prank" that's easy to fix.

They should have several people go to the adjacent strutures and find out if they have power. If the other buildings have power, that's good.

They should then check the following 2 things: 1) find the electric meter (may be inside or outside). Someone may have pulled the meter and this would cut all power. 2) They should also check the electrical equipment room. It's possible someone walk by the room, pulled the main disconnect to kill power, and left the building.

Probably a blown out transformer...checked Pittsburgh weather--light rain/ mist. Had the same conditions here a few days ago. We were driving down a street...misty...I saw a flash of light thru the mist & heard a big pow...thought I was a goner! A transformer blew. When one of those goes, you can be out of juice, but the folks across the street can still have electricity.

Check the main panel, seriously, sometimes they are located on the outside of the building with a great big shutoff switch on the side of them...Most aren't even locked...
