Long lines before the poll opened. "Gay" marriage ban on the ballot. Lines even longer after we exited. Looks like a larger-than-normal turnout. Of course, having Michael 'the fat one' Moore with Rosanne 'the even fatter one' Barr just help get the Repubs even more motivated.

the most interesting race here is the sole incumbent Democrat congressman - Jim Matheson - in a rematch against John Swallow. Lots of DNCC & RNCC adds airing here. In 2000, Matheson won by maybe 1%. Poll information in Utah is hard to come by, however, increased interest in the presidential race may help Swallow. Interesting factoid - the DNCC is actually running ads for Matheson TOUTING his support of Bush's tax cuts!!

Voted in the most conservative county in the entire nation. Loooong lines at 7:00 am, but everyone seemed excited to be there to punch a ballot for President Bush!

A pack of rabid dogs couldn't have kept me away...

I'll be voting in Clearfield today and there's no real hot issues this year except for the gay marriage amendment.

I think I heard that the Mormon church came out in support of the anti-gay marriage amendment. Is that true? If so, how will that effect the voting in Utah?

I voted this morning in Murray, the center of the Democratic bastion that some know as the Salt Lake Valley. My father and I were the fifth and sixth people to vote in our district. There weren't too many people thereat 7am. Utah always has district judges on the list and it through me for a loop, because there isn't much information on the district judge in the voter guide. I hope there weren't any I should have voted down :)

The LDS Church issued a statement stating its belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. They didn't specifically endorse the amendment, but it should pass handily. President Bush should also get 68% or more of the vote.

I love this state!

Boy I miss Utah. I'm in Washington State because of work. Here's the LDS statement on same-gender marriage, released on Oct 19:

"We of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reach out with understanding and respect for individuals who are attracted to those of the same gender. We realize there may be great loneliness in their lives but there must also be recognition of what is right before the Lord.

"As a doctrinal principle, based on sacred scripture, we affirm that marriage between a man and a woman is essential to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children. The powers of procreation are to be exercised only between a man and a woman lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

"Any other sexual relations, including those between persons of the same gender, undermine the divinely created institution of the family. The Church accordingly favors measures that define marriage as the union of a man and a woman and that do not confer legal status on any other sexual relationship."
